So, I have been thinking about going back to school to become a nurse practioner and am feeling torn on exactly what to go for. I have 2 years of RN experience in a Level 3 NICU. I have been told (by multiple people in fact), that you can become an FNP and work in a NICU if you have had NICU nursing experience?

I would really like to be an NNP but am afraid of completely closing off other job opportunities if an NNP position is not available.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure about that or if each hospital is different, but at ours, you have to be a neonatal NP to work in NICU and a peds NP or neonatal NP to work in normal newborn. I'd do a little research about that before you go jumping in.

We have a PNP in our NICU, but she had considerable experience...

Personally, I don't think it'd be safe to just be a FNP. That's a lot of responsibility on your shoulders for something out of your league...

NNP jobs are in high demand too, btw.

I've never heard of a FNP being in a NICU. RARELY a PNP...very rarely..
