It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)

If you think a supplemental page/resume would help, then attach it. You can also incorporate it into your essay of its relevant and appropriate. Try to havr your recommenders finish the recommendations asap so you can get that outta the way. Deadline is in a few weeks, wow!!

I'm filling out the employment history section of the application and wondering about uploading a supplemental document. I don't have anything "to explain" in terms of a big employment gap or anything like that but should I upload a PDF résumé just to provide more detail about the (non-health-related but customer-service-related) work I've done? The history page doesn't give any room for, say, a job title or description of any kind. How have you all approached this section? Thanks! :)[/quote']

I did a supplement for my employment history because I've had a lot of experience that I wanted to talk about and there wasn't a lot of room. So yep, if you think it would help, then add it! A HUGE part of nursing is customer service and making your patient comfortable and happy so customer service can be relevant experience :)

Awesome, thanks! Yeah, I have some relevant volunteer/extracurricular work in college that would also be good to talk about, but it's far enough in the past that I don't feel comfortable entering that info on the web form.

its also important to remember that the best applicants ARENT always the ones who've had years and years of healthcare experience, such as being a nurse's aid or an EMT. our class is quite diverse in that people majored in different areas and have extensive backgrounds and experience in different fields that arent related to healthcare necessarily. if you can relate whatever experience you had into how you'll be a good nurse, etc., then do that! :nurse:

Hey Spiritedkidd,

Do you know if there are any people in your class that do not have any medical volunteer experience? I have tons of volunteer experience that i do with my job, but i do not work in the healthcare field. I have no "patient care" experience but have interacted with patient's at volunteer events that my company sponsors. I am just nervous that they wont even look at my application because i have never joined a volunteer program at a hospital or anything.

@LAGD: dont count yourself out! there are definitely people in our class who dont have medical volunteer experience. i cant emphasize enough how diverse our class is! please dont deprive yourself of the chance/opportunity just because you dont have any medical experience. stony looks at the applicant as a whole and takes into account everything: GPA, essay, recommendations, prior experiences, etc. if you really want to get into the program, dont let that stop you! go for it because you never know what may happen.

Hi everyone, I just decided to apply to Stony Brook's accelerated 1 year program as of last week. So i'm finishing up getting all my recommendation letters and having my official transcripts sent. I just have 1 question about the pre-reqs I hope someone can help me with! One of the pre-req's was Chemistry 2 or another science. I took a one semester chemistry course that combined bio chem, organic, and inorganic designed for nursing students. So I never took 2 semesters of chemistry and my only other science course is a everyday chem course that had a lab, but was a requirement for graduation at my undergrad university. Will this course still be considered as a pre-req or should I be worried??

Hey evc17! I feel like that will probably count as your "other science," but it might be worth giving a call or email to Karen Allard at the admissions office to be sure :)

when is the latest you would recommended submitting your application? and I thought we just needed to upload unofficial transcripts, and you only send official transcripts if you are admitted. That's what Karen Allard told me.

I don't really understand this question, Shayna - the app is due by 10/17, and I don't know if there's a benefit to sending it much earlier than that. I thought official transcripts had to arrive by that date as well, but I could be wrong.

There's no benefit to sending it in early. Definitely ask Karen, but remember, prerequisites can be done next semester too so even if it doesn't count, still apply!!
