Pre-Nursing Help /: From BMCC to CUNY Hunter

U.S.A. New York

Published

I started going to Borough of Manhattan CC last fall semester and this will be my last semester before I transfer to Hunter.

My grades are as follows -

MAT104: C+

CHE121: B

ENG101: A

SPE100: A

PSY100: A

ENG201: A

PSY240: A

HED100: A

CHE122: B

BIO425: C- or D :(((((

I was not sure if Hunter was gonna accept me so I didn't take their pre-reqs of Stats and a History class. I also understand they don't offer Dosage calculations math (MAT104) so will that grade transfer over and be a factor in my GPA? Also can I retake/repeat Anatomy and Physiology I (BIO425) there? In summer I plan on taking BIO 426 as there are no more spaces in summer BIO 425. I feel so stupid and I've been panicking for weeks also thinking of a backup. When can I even apply for Hunter's nursing program? I still have to take those pre-reqs and I don't even know what to do for Spring 2015.

I would go personally to Hunter College and speak with either the Registrar's office and or someone in the nursing department to get a definite answer. Make sure you get the name and position of whomever you speak with and it that should be at all possible someone not just a secretary.

You have two things going here; one is the fact you are already a CUNY student and the other is HB has moved A&P from being a prerequisite to classes that are taken after one has been formally accepted into the program. HB's admissions webpage only speaks to their not accepting repeated prerequisite courses under any circumstances, but is mum otherwise. Am sure however there are rules about what science and or nursing courses can be repeated for those already in the program.

The other worry for you is that even if you repeat and obtain an "A" in AP1, HB uses NursingCAS application system. It will automatically calculate both grades into your GPA, so that "C" may ding you below the 3.2 HB requires.

I did my prereqs at Hunter, and what the above poster said about the science classes being no joke is absolutely true. If you look at the Hunter posts on this board, you'll see that most of the people accepted had GPAs more in the 3.8 and above range and you need to score VERY highly on the NLN (I had a 155 and did not get in). Taking my courses there put me in the top of my nursing class at the place I ended up going to nursing school, away from the city, but just know that the school will not be honest with you - they will tell you to apply when you don't have a chance because they want your money.

Thank you for the posts everyone.

I am taking everything said into consideration, but I feel like I'm at a dead end. I can't apply to another nursing school because CUNY is all my family can afford.

I am assessing my study skills and weighing in all the options I have.

I kept recalculating my grades for this year (a 3.34 GPA) and seeing what I'd need to do to get a 3.6

seconddegreebsn, what was your GPA when you applied?

3.6 with a 155 on nln--I applied twice and didn't get in. Consider other cuny schools like lehman, York or maybe stay at bmcc, they have a great program.

When did you apply?

2012 and 2013. They give preference to people who took their prerequisite there.

Thank you so much seconddegreebsn for posting. I got accepted to Hunter for regular undergrad, and even though my GPA is strong, it's a 3.6 or 3.7. I don't want to waste my time doing a semester there, paying for and studying for the NLN when it looks like I have a snowball's chance of getting in. Your post is SO helpful, especially since they base entrance strictly on numbers.

Good luck wherever you're going nyjean :)
