NYC new grad - When to apply?

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi guys,

I'm sure this may have been asked before but I can't find a thread with it so I hope some people have a bit of insight on this that they're willing to share. When should a new grad send out resumes for a job in New York City? Some say March, but some people have been saying not to apply until after you pass the NCLEX. I'm just worried if I go to early I won't know if people aren't calling me back for that reason, but I also am concerned if I apply to late that it'll be, well, too late.

Thoughts?

You should apply before you graduate. Call the Nurse Recruitment office/ HR of the hospitals that you are interested in and ask them when you can apply as a new grad RN. If you are graduating in May/June you should be preparing to send out resumes.

I am not even an official nursing student yet but I have enough friends who went through the process.

In this market...the early bird catches the worm.

I agree that the earlier the better, but keep in mind that these days you can not get a job pending your NCLEX. Hospitals want you to be licensed before they hire you... and that may take a little time after you graduate. But of course, calling the hospitals and talking to recruiters is your best bet.

Good luck!!

NYS licensed new grad here. My friends have been jobless in NY for over 7 months and finally got jobs. I find hospitals in NYC won't even look at new grads, they are looking for experienced nurses.

Not true but right now it's all about connections in NYC. They also have new grad programs at NYP, Mount Sinai and Montefiore that you can apply for. However a lot of my friends who graduated recently and have gotten jobs usually got them through clinical/preceptorship connections or are still working the nursing extern route until an RN position opens up.
