Nursing Programs New York-Metro Area

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi-

I have been trying to get into an Accelerated BS Nursing degree program through SUNY for 3 years now. I did not get into the Stony Brook Program and am currently on an alternate list for Downstate Medical Center. I have a SUNY undergrad degree (BA Art History) and after much research and advice decided that building on my first degree to achieve a BS in Nursing was my best option to enter the nursing field. Unfortunately, these SUNY programs only have about 40 seats each and are only offered once per year. I have over a 3.0 average undergrad, a 4.0 in my pre-req's and volunteer at a Peds ER unit once per week. I'm not sure what else I can do to be accepted. I cannot afford a private school. At this point I just want to start my education and get to work, but I am frustrated and not sure what to do next. I have heard the CUNY and SUNY Associates programs have up to 2 year waiting lists (though I have not looked into this first-hand). I do want to obtain an advanced degree and don't want to have to wait another year or two to start. Does anyone have any advice? Should I move to another state???? Thank you very much.

:balloons: hi i am new to the boards....i really enjoyed reading many interesting situations. (mine is a long story....so here goes)

i am currently in a master's degree program for education. i feel good about my choice of career...received a scholarship...4.0gpa. have to take 4 state exams....last/atws/cst (2)....pass with a 220 for each exam.

i've always wanted to be a nurse. i graduated from julia richman with a nursing diploma in 1976...took the nclex -pn, failed and did not have the courage to try to take the exam again....i went into the secretarial field....got my associate's degree, then got my bachelor's degree in psy from coll. of nr. i recently was laid off from my job....returned to school to obtain my master's degree to teach in the nyc school system. i'm troubled, because i feel like a came into the field at a crucial point where the system is crazy.

anyway, as a back up...my husband said, that i was born to be a nurse..i should pursue programs. this week, i went i went to bronx community college....lpn program....i did not feel like i got the appropiate information. then on to bmcc, (back in 1986, i attended bmcc did some credits there and did not return)...i feel like i have a good chance of entering the program....is there a waiting list? i'm interested in the lpn evening/weekend program

then i went to hostos....seems like there is a waiting list...i have to take nln, ati, essay exam just to get into the lpn certification program.....then it's not guaranteed that i get into the program.

wanted to check out westchester cc's program...lpn certification....next admission is january

i really do not care if i get a degree...it's the time frame that i want to cut down on...i want to enter an 18 month program......

i'm 45 years old....i don't want to waste any time....but i too feel like i should have been a nurse........

if any of you "to be" nurses or any current nurses are out there...please respond....i'm at a cross roads...i feel misdirected....but i'm willing to do the work...and my family is there for me.....

thanks everyone...hope to hear from anyone soon!

Wow, you're really prepared. I'm going to the two-day orientation in June. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll be in the accelerated program.]

Hi Wendy:

How did the orientation go? What are your thoughts about the campus, town, program, etc. Getting anxious/excited about the move. Any info you have helps.

Thanks, Bobbie

Hey Bobby,

Unfortunately things didn't go as planned and I didn't get to go upstate. I guess I'll go to the orientation when I get there in August but my cluelessness is making me anxious. Sorry I couldn't help you with the info but if I hear anything I'll let you know.
