HI ALL!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL GRADUATING NURSES AND SOON TO BE NURSES IN PROGRESS!!!

I have a slight dilemma... I want to be a Nurse, this is truly my calling as I love to help people and care about the well - being of all. The problem is I am 29 years old (I'll be 30 this year), and I am working full time in a retail chain store (I was just hired in November 2008). I just got promoted to shift supervisor and will be (possibly) promoted to Assistant Manager in about 2 months. My working hours are mostly 3pm - 11pm.

I have a 7 year old daughter and am independent, (paying rent, bills, ect..) so I have to work to support my family.

I have college credits 26 total, from Bronx Community College, here are the classes I completed thus far related to nursing;

Intro to Psychology B

Sociology A-

Health and Human Nutrition A-

Communications 11 C-

English 11 C+

English 14 A

CPR 10 C

Health 91 A-

Chemistry 02 (remedial) D+

Math 01 (remedial) A

My thoughts was to go into an LPN Program so I can fast track into nursing, or should I just transfer to a college closer to my job and continue on with my pre - requisites like Anatomy & Physiology 1 & 2, Chemistry 17, Microbiology, Elementary Algerbra & Trigonometry, and Physical Education, and then transfer into a nursing program once all pre - reqs are done?

Being that I cannot quit my job I can only take a few classes at a time. This could take me another 1 and 1/2 years just for my pre - reqs to be completed and another possibly 2 years to finish a nursing program in which I would only go to classes part - time and still work full time. And if I do go to an LPN program it would have to be part - time as well....

Does the LPN Route sound like a better plan to you or should I just continue my pre - reqs and go into an RN program...

Please help me my fellow ALL NURSES. COM peers... Thanx

LPN Program is a shorter program! It lasts about 12 months. It seems to me that you may have limitations because of your family situation. Getting into any nursing programs is not easy! If you already had an AAS Program as well as an LPN Program accepting you about the same time, then you start to ask which one is good for you!

Thanks lpn2icu, for the advice and replying to the post, any advice is greatly appreciated, are you an LPN? or studying to become an LPN? do you enjoy the work you do?

I was an LPN between 1999 and 2004! I have been an RN since August 2004!

A job in nursing is not easy! But if you liked to deal with sick people, then you would get some satisfaction from it! I have a year experience in ICU and a year experience in Med/Surg and the rest is really geriatric care! Sometime my patients make my life very miserable; but I always see it as a part of their diseases! The hardest part was in the Med/Surg ICU when some very young patients died! It really "tramatized" me! Other than that, I really like nursing!!!

Hi allnurses family.. I hope everyone is well out there. Well I was debating this question for awhile, and really didn't know what to do but I had a dream that said go for the rn. So that's what I'll do.... thanks lpn2icu for your helpful advice and all my allnurses family. I love this website....
