I am going to be taking courses for a nursing diploma and it is in New Jersey but i live in New York.

I was wondering does anyone know if i can work in New York right away or do i have to work in Jersey for a bit then take the license exam for NY?

Where you go to school has no bearing on what state you practice in. When it's time for you to apply for NCLEX, you'll be asked to pick a state that you wish to apply for licensure. In your case it would be NY, so that's what you'll chose. I know because I went to school outside of NY but I'm license in NY...and no you don't have to work in NJ first!!! Also, the NCLEX is a national test so you can apply for licensure in whatever state you which but you don't have to physically (i.e. the place where you go to take the test) take the test in that state. For example, if you live in NJ and you have applied for licensure for NY and the test center you picked is in NJ, it is absolutely alright to do so.
