How to got your foot in the door?

For those without inside connection who are getting call back for interview or recently hired can you let us know what what you did. I have sent out hundreds of resume with no call back and would like some insight of what I'm doing wrong. I'm currently in a BSN program and working Homecare which doesn't seem to be helping me. So any info on if you:

-Submitted cover letter with your appl.

-Reach out to the hiring manager

-Walk in -Submitted multiply application for same position

Any small tip would be appreciated.

Same here since march, only one interview and I don't know what else to do.
