For anyone still looking for work - IT'S POSSIBLE

U.S.A. New York

For anyone who's still looking for work after an extended search, be it a few month or even a couple of years, I hope my story will give you some hope.

I graduated from a BSN program in 2009 - 4 year program finished in 3 years - with honors, great clinical experience and references and a job lined up at NYP-Columbia on a specialized unit. I passed the NCLEX no problem. Unfortunately, life happens and a family situation made it so I had to turn down the offer just days before orientation was to begin and I had to move to California. Fast forward 5 years and I moved back to NYC with a 3 year old son also. During the now 6+ years since I graduated nursing school I worked as a professional securities trader. Money could be good but it lacked stability, health insurance and it was never what I really wanted to do. I never worked as a nurse but decided to give nursing another try. I applied to Mt Sinai MC for a specialized unit, interviewed with 2 co-managers and the head nurse manager and just accepted the formal job offer sent by HR/talent acq this last week. I start New Beginnings (orientation) on Feb 29th.

I honestly don't know how special my case is. I feel blessed and very lucky that I got hired on a very competitive unit in a very competitive hospital - especially as a "new grad" +6 years after the fact. Yes, I'm working nights but I would have taken anything and in the end it works better for me as a single parent with a now 5 year old.

My situation is about as fall out in hopeless territory as they come. Have hope and good luck.

Good Luck!!!

Thank you

Hello. Congrats! I been applying to Mt Sinai since 2012 when i graduated. However only recently they hire me since I now have 2 plus years experience in hospital. I was hired into a specialty that I have not worked in. So it's a type of new beginning. My orientation will be Feb 29 also. What specialty area are you in?

I'm just curious, how long after the interview did you guys wait for an offer? Did they ask for your references to fill out the SkillsSurvey before hand?

It was very quick. Basically heard from HR the next day with a phone call from Talent Acquisition and Retention team - my team was Cardiology and Oncology. They sent me a bunch of emails, including the SkillsSurvey (References). I got the official offer email and e-signature acceptance 2 days after that. But I know processing times vary greatly. The HR team thus far at Mt Sinai have been extraordinarily professional - really worked hard to push me through for the Feb 29 orientation start, including getting all the employee health screening, ect done quickly.

Awesome! I went to an Interview Day on Friday and they wanted me to do the SkillsSurvey immediately after the interview. I don't know if that's a good sign? I know there were 9 people interviewing after me so maybe they were just going to do that for everyone?

That's wonderful! Congratulations!

Did you interview for the NICU interview day? I did my I-9 docs and photo for ID that day and talked with several nurses applying for the NICU day. I would say that is a VERY good sign. It basically means you made it past to the next round. Good LUCKKKK!!! And make sure those references make you look like the superstar nurse that you are!

Thanks so much! Really looking forward to helping patients and their families in onc !

Yes!! I was there for the NICU interview day! Omg thank you! All but one of my references filled them out already so hopefully I hear something back soon. Did they call when all of yours were completed?

That's a funny coincidence!

No actually they called and sent the official offer letter before all 5 were completeled (4 completed) but all 3 of the manager references were done (min was 2). The process might be different for you if you didn't already interview with the nurse manager - at Mt Sinai they still have the authority and ultimate say in hiring decisions. A couple of the nurses I spoke with didn't know who exactly they were going to interview with - HR or manager.
