Best hospital to work in Albuquerque, NM

U.S.A. New Mexico

Published

Hi everyone! This is my first post so hopefully I do this right.

I'm a BSN student in Phoenix, AZ and I'm officially done in about 7 weeks. I'm moving to ABQ to live with my soon-to-be husband and would love to find my first nursing job.

Obviously I will take whatever I get starting out, but since I did all my school and clinicals in Phoenix, I don't know anything about the hospitals in ABQ. I know of Lovelace, UNM Hospital, and the VA but I haven't heard about employee satisfaction or general reputation from anyone. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Albuquerque? Have you ever been there? It's a giant cess-pool of a truck stop. Just passing through gave me temporary depression....

I knew a med student at UNM who liked the atmosphere and management if that means anything....

Specializes in ICU, step down, dialysis.

Moved to NM Forum for best response.

Specializes in Trauma, Teaching.

I beg to differ in opinion about Albuquerque.

Just keep going on through......

OP, I don't work in Albuquerque, but UNM has a union (1199), of which I am a member in my hospital, it is large, and a trauma center, connected to an SON, med school, and lots of other health professions; so they are used to students/new grads. Don't know how easy it is to get in though. UNM also has lots of clinics, not just inpatient.

My daughter is doing a (nonmedical) residency at Presbyterian and likes it.

The Heart Hospital has a good rep, and we do ship people there if needed (cath lab is down or something).

Don't know about the VA, other than we do have an Air Force Base there, as well as National Guard; and some of my local folks get most of their care down at the VA and only come in locally for emergencies.

Lovelace has several branches, so there is some leeway about what part of town you are in.

Women's Hospital on Montgomery treated my daughters (as patients) well.

Jbudd, thanks for the input! I'm actually moving there because my fiance is in the air force and we will be there for about a year....so short term...but still I was hoping for a less than terrible transition into a new grad program maybe? I've heard so many horror stories about not feeling prepared as a new nurse to take on the load. I've done some researching and I believe Presbyterian has a good new grad/mentorship orientation so I may try for that. I've heard UNM nurses are crabby... (according to my fiance who works with them often) haha.

As you are connected to the Air Force, they may well be more understanding about the shorter term plans; possible even allow for transfers to other VA hospitals? worth looking into.

UNM should have a decent new grad program, beings as they have a large SON there, BSN, MSN and PhDs. When my son was an inpatient I didn't have any problems with the nurses there.

Welcome to New Mexico!

I think pretty much everybody in Albuquerque is crabby. Haha jk not everyone but there is a lot of attitude in this city, a lot good people though. I would say Presbyterian I have several family members that have worked there for 20+ years and love it. Good company.
