Mountainside School of Nursing

I graduated last June. As far as I know, only 2 people didn't get RN bedside jobs out of the approx 60 in my class. 1 didn't pass the NCLEX and the other opted for a non-hospital administrative position.

There will always be jobs for RNs. A lot of hospitals have tightened up hiring new grads right now, but that will change with attrition and an upswing in the economy.

Plus (and not for nothing), many of the folks who can't find jobs are also looking at a time when hospitals simply aren't hiring d/t scheduling concerns. Most hospitals seem to condense their new grad orientations into the summer months, so you need to be lined up for that 1st job waaaaay before graduation and the boards.

F'rinstance, I graduated in June '08. I started applying for jobs in Dec '07, interviewed in Jan and Feb, got the written offer in March to start in Aug (pending passing the boards of course). The majority of my classmates did roughly the same. Doing an externship between 1st & 2nd years and/or being a p/t tech are also great ways to get your foot in the door and establish a network before you graduate.

Bottom line, go for it.....

"Did you re-take the nclex?" Huh??? Retake it?? Took the NCLEX in July '08, 75 questions in 48 minutes, easy test, nothing like it's made out to be. My written agreement with the hospital was that they hold an orientation spot and hire me officially if I passed the boards. Which I did and started work in August '08.

Did you like MHSON overall? Yes.

Oh nice. Sorry...I thought it said "i" didnt pass the nclex...but you typed '1' didnt pass....misunderstood. I really want to apply with Mountainside....I would start in Fall of 2010.

Where are you working now if you don't mind me asking....also will I have a problem finding work in this economy....or if I only have a diploma? I do have my BA in psychology...but I don't want to go back for another bach degree.

I wouldn't worry at all about finding work in 2012! Hopefully the economy will be well on its way up again by then.

Also, finding a job in virtually any field is tough right now, but I do believe that nursing is still better than many fields. It's certainly not recession-proof, like some people like to say, but it suffers less than many or most fields. Can you imagine a hospital cutting 25-50% of its employees the way some other businesses (construction companies, architecture and advertising firms, etc.) have? So think of it this way ... even though it's tough to find a job in nursing now, is it better than the field you're in right now?

Hey every one. I want to apply to Mountainside School of Nursing next year. I was wondering is there a gpa requirement i think i read something about 2.0 gpa but thats very unlikely in NJ. Also I would like to know is there a waiting list as many of the other nursing schools in NJ. If anyone has any infor that they know would be helpful I would bre very grateful. Thank you

I don't know about the GPA -- go on the website, I think it has all the info about requirements.

There's no waiting list; they either accept you or they don't. Also, you can call the school -- they're very good about answering any questions you have!
