TMCC Question...

Anyone know how hard it is to get into the TMCC nursing program? And if anyone was in there program how long did it take you to finish with all the pre-reqs? Thanks, any info will be appreciated!

Are you in Reno yet? If you're transferring and already have the prereqs done, this may not apply...but if you're starting from scratch, here's my experience:

I'm going to UNR, but I took all of my prereq's at TMCC. It can take a while, since the way it's set up is kinda drawn out...all the prereq's have prereq's. I started taking my prereq's at TMCC with the intention of applying to their nursing program.

Nursing prereqs at TMCC are BIOL 223, 224 & 251 (A&P I, A&P II, and Microbiology). So, you need MATH 120 to take CHEM 121 to take BIOL 190. BIOL 190 is the prereq for BIOL 223 and 251, then you can take 224 after you pass 223 with a C. So right there, there's 5 semesters. To top it all off, you need to take a placement test for math and English to register for classes there, so if you place in a class lower than MATH 120, you may have to take lower math classes before you can advance. On their website, they make it look easy: BIOL 223, 224 and 251, then apply...but it isn't that simple.

The good news: many of these classes are offered in the summer, so it only took me 1.5 years. The bad news...many of these classes are offered in the summer, and who wants to ruin there summer!? Well, I did.

The thing I realized though, it the way they have prereqs set up, I could easily take enough other classes to satisfy the core requirements at UNR and just go there instead. I'm getting my BSN done in 3.5 years and if I went to TMCC and got my ADN, I probably would have taken just as long, if not longer since they seem to get more applicants. Both nursing schools, once you're accepted are 4 semesters in length.

UNR accepts 48 in the spring and 48 in the fall and it's GPA based admission. I rocked my prereqs and got in with a 3.95 the first time I applied.

I hope this was helpful - feel free to PM me any questions about TMCC or Reno in general. I may have some good suggestions on who to take at TMCC.

Take care!

Hmmm it takes about 4 full semesters to get done with the prerequisites. I just recently graduated from TMCC this spring.

When i applied, my GPA wasn't the greatest between 3.0-3.3. Let alone good enough for UNR mind you which i hear is atleast a 3.6 to get in. hehehe

It really isn't that hard to get into the program, it's just having a decent GPA on all of your SCIENCE classes (i.e. BIO 190,223,224,251 etc ) ... Ok to explain it even further please go to http://www.tmcc.edu/nursing/downloads/documents/NursingSpecAdmissProc.pdf

That link describes the new admission procedures that are taking place at TMCC. Please read these websites or go directly to TMCC Nursing Program website at http://www.tmcc.edu/nursing/

From the feeling i'm getting on the TMCC program, they have raised the bar in getting into the program. For instance, i started in Fall of 2005. We started with 56 students right (i think) for the first semester, second semester rolls around we lose 3 but gain 3 so we have the same amount of students. Third semester rolls around we lose about 15-20. So we're down to 33. Midway through the 3rd semester we lost 3 more people. So in the 4th and last semester we only have 30 people. Do the math 56 to 30 is an EYE OPENER..

To me it sounds as if our school is trying its best to decrease the amount of people who fail out of the program. Anyways i'm finished with it, and i have to say it's a solid program. Very great program to learn fundamentals and hands-on. If you have any questions regarding how the program goes, just message me.

What exactly does it mean that they will calculate all lower division classes into your GPA? I have my BS already, but didn't do so hot on some of the coursework. I took my prereqs (BIO 223, 224, and 251) and I got A's in all 3. Do you think I will be able to get in if I got A's on those 3 classes? Of course I know I have to take the HESI test, but I'm not so sure how the GPA calculation works. Any advice/help would be wonderful.

I recently attended an orientation and learned that they accepted GPA's as low as 2.75 last year. Also, you may be happy to know that they will be accepting 96 students this Fall ( traditional and fast track put together). Good luck.

Wow that is awesome. So does all of your classes count towards your GPA or only their prereqs? Thanks for the help. I am planning on attending the orientation next month to clear some things up. I have just heard how hard it is so maybe I'm paranoid. Thanks again!

Johnyfabulous,

you may want to register to take the Hesi before the actual date of the exam, spots are filling up quickly. Did you go to the orientation to get the info you needed ?
