New grad rn in las vegas, nevada

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Nursing in May of 2009 and passed the NCLEX RN in July. I have been searching everywhere for a facility in the Las Vegas area that is willing to hire a new graduate and have had no luck at all. I can't even find ONE upcoming new grad program. It is very discouraging. :crying2: Has anyone else in the area had this same problem or does anyone have any advice or inside information that I may be missing? Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated :redpinkhe

Thanks for the info, yeah i heard something bout the compact states and license endorsement... moving to another state could really help to get employed. I somehow thought about it, my father offered me the same option though... but as of now am still hoping to get a job here.. so as not to leave my family...

I haven't tried out-of-state but i heard it's easy to get employed in Florida and Canada... My RN license is for Nevada, i dont know if they would hire me in other states using that license or i need to take their state exam too..[/quote: carmie_a]

I'm not so sure about Florida, they are one of the states listed in the 'Top list for Unemployment'. Don't bet on NV for the next 2 years or so, the mess is just awful here. It's going to be a while before things become "normal" again for this state. If I were you, I'd try up north (VT, MA, CT ?) and I hear ND, SD, maybe VA are good bets? States near us seem to have caught the "high unemployment rate" bug!

Just wanted to update everyone..... yes, I am STILL looking for that elusive full time RN position. Yikes. Have any of you had more luck than me? Do I have ANY hope?

I did find one, I would start looking at UHS hospitals for med-surg, and keep bugging HR directors. Flu season is coming up, and we have lost some staff. Try Desert Springs Hospital, med surg! Good luck!

hi

There are lots of New Grad RN openings in LA, california. Also check out websites of all the hospitals in Vegas, get in touch with HR and enquire abt when they are accepting new grad application. I made my search a full time job till I landed one just recently. You will find one too. All the best

Hi everyone. So I passed my NCLEX and am officially an RN. I have been looking for a nursing job in Las Vegas, NV for a while and there is nothing. Everyone I talk to will not hire new grads! I dont know what to do anymore. Times are so tough and my husband is about to get laid off now as he is in construction and it has totally slowed down. I have walked into hopitals, job fairs, nursing homes and so far no luck. If anyone has any advice or leads they could share I would really really appreciate it. Thanks!

I understand where u are coming from scasamento. I moved here after graduating with my Bachelors degree in nursing because my fiancée had to move her for his job. I have been looking for a new grad position for about 3 months now. Summerlin Hospital had two new grad positions posted that I applied for at the end of Sept. My application to them is currently being reviewed. It has had that status for about 3 weeks now and the HR department is saying they are still reviewing for people to interview. Have you tried the Home Health care agencies or rehabs yet? I need to find a job very soon because my student loan repayments are starting in Dec. It's getting a little depressing.

I have tried home health, nursing homes, rehabs, etc. You name it and I have applied. Everyone wants at least a year experience. Its so frustrating and I really dont know what to do anymore. Most of the hospitals said that they dont have any new grad programs starting anytime soon. It just doesnt make sense that they want people to go to school and then once you are done you cant get a job. Its so unfair!!

I totally understand and agree. I had a job before I left MI. I moved out here to be with my boyfriend of 6 years, thinking I would not have any trouble finding a job here. I thought it couldn't be any harder to find a job here than it is in MI. I went form the highest unemployment rate in MI to the new highest in NV. I feel like I have wasted the last five years of my life for nothing. I am so use to working and going to school that now that I have nothing to do all day it makes me feel unfulfilled and like I'm losing all that i have learned by not using it.

I went to Summerlin hospital today to find out why I haven't heard anything in 4 weeks about their new grad positions. They said they had so many applications and resumes to go through it is taking a long time to process them. So they have probably gotten all the new grads in f las Vegas applying for the only 2 new grad positions in the entire city.

Does anyone know of any longterm care/skilled nursing facilities that are hiring new graduates, I am trying to relocate back to Vegas but having a tough time finding employment. Thanks!!!!

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. I checked online and Summerlin didnt even look at my application or resume they just declined me. I dont get it. I finished top in my class. I totally can relate to you on feeling unfufilled. I went to school out in CA and I feel like moving back here was a mistake. Even though there are not many jobs out in CA either there are still some. I did find a position at a weight clinic, but its so not what I want to do. Its taking vitals, teaching about what foods to eat and measuring the patients. Its very slow and I feel like I am not learning anything. I am trying to stay positive, but this is just ridiculious that our economy has gotten this bad. I dont know what to do, but I really need a job before we drown in bills. Some are saying that is might get a little better come January, but if there are that many new grads here looking for work I dont think its going to get better any time soon.

Specializes in med-surg.

Usually, hospitals in LV only do new grad programs in the summer. They start in May/June.

My advice to any new grad is to make yourself more marketable by that time. Have ACLS, BLS, and PALS. Know the director and/or managers names of the unit you are applying to and check up on the status of your application frequently.

I know you guys may be thinking that next summer you will be an "old" new grad, but don't let that discourage you. You are just as good as a "new" new grad that will be graduating this December and this May.

Has anyone thought of applying to LPN jobs and offering to work as an RN at an LPN wage? That is what one of my coworkers did. She worked as an RN at an LPN wage for six months at a LTC facility until she scored a new grad job on the floor I worked at.

Hang in there! Don't give up!
