Las Vegas nursing in the future

Hey everyone!

I am currently in nursing school in Chicago. I am planning on moving out to Las Vegas in maybe about 3-4 years. I have noticed how much Las Vegas is growing and how many new hospitals are being built. For those of you that are working in Las Vegas hospitals now; do you think that within the next couple of years there are going to be nursing opportunities readily available?

Hi im Bryan im also a nurse in chicago ready to move to las vegas as soon as i sell my home. Just to give u a clue there are tons of nursing jobs in vegas the problem is you apply and no one ever calls u , u have to be very aggressive in follow up to get anywhere. They are currently building three new hospitals there. The total i think is going to be 16. Iv been an ER/Cardiac nurse for 18 with experience and still had to get on them to get going on hiring me.Just annoying with all the ads u see for nursing there they dont follow up. No wonder there is a nursing shortage there. Bryan

That is so true. I'm about to be a new grad rn here in vegas and I've heard alot about how HR literally never calls people back. No idea why. They just don't. Sometimes if the Unit Manager knows you they have you send them your resume too and then both you and the UM harrass HR. Silly but true. Tons of nursing jobs here. Also sometimes they try to trick people into taking medsurg saying that they have no room in ER or ICU. Not true. Once they get you in med surg they tend to like to keep you there so if you are specialty or want to be speciality stick to your guns, they will cave eventually.

I agree! I am a graduate from University of Iowa and moved to Vegas with my husbands career. I have been leaving messages with the HR and am equally frustrated with getting any response. You have to constantly stay on them. I am heading to the nursing managers next. I know they are hurting out here and its frustrating knowing there could be many other nurses waiting to get started!

I live and work in Nursing in Las Vegas. Summer time is a slow, regarding low census of lots staff, not as interested in position hires sometimes. Make sure you can afford to live here, maybe try a travel position before you make a permanent decision.

my mother and sister live in las vegas, I was just wondering do you have to retake the nclex when you move there or how does that work. I really would like to join them one day, I am in Ohio and Las Vegas is the place where I want to make my home... I am tired of these winters. thanks

The NCLEX is a national exam. You can take it in any state even other countries ( I took mine in London) and choose which state(s) you want to be endorsed. If you take it in Ohio you can apply for Ohio's licensure or Nevada. Any state! That's what is nice about the NCLEX becoming national. ( a few states require an addional testing portion, but you will be notified only if the state you are applying in has any.) The only difference is that each state requires a licensure fee. Some are more than others. When you go to take your exam, regardless of the location, just make sure to fill out the paperwork and pay the fee for the state you want your license to be active in.

You can be active in more than one state too. It just cost a little more $$> If you change your mind after working in OH for awhile once you get to NV you only have to pay their licensure fee which ended up being around $150 with processing fees. Good Luck!

Hey all, I was glad to read this thread as I am trying to get a hospital job in Vegas also and am getting so frustrated at the lack of response from HR. I have 2 yrs experience in L&D (in another state) and I know some of the depts I have applied to are using agency-- yet I can't get through HR to get an interview!! Do I just keep calling them? Call the nurse managers on the unit? Advice, please. I have been working in home health here and want to get back into the hospital.

Try calling the nurse managers directly. HR will never get back to you. If a nurse manager likes you then they will contact HR to set up an interview. If L&D is what you want to get back into I'd call St Rose Siena Hospital L&D. I have heard they are hiring. Good luck!

To the working nursing students, do you find it hard to find a job in the hospital while you attend classes ? Do you need experience or does HR favor hiring nursing students for jobs such as those in admitting, unit coordinator, dietary aide or hospital CNA, etc ?

I am just getting started in my prereqs but still have a ways to go, however I do know that most employers will not give you the time of day if you do not have a local number. At least that is what I have seen from clerical jobs and casino jobs. Maybe try a medical staffing agency? Just a thought! Good luck!
