I was told by a graduate from CCSN that after the first or second semester of nursing school you can work at the hospital. Does anyone know what type of nursing job this is, whether it is after the first or second semester, and how much it typically pays? Thanks in advance, I'm just trying to figure out bills if I get in for the spring.

i think you mean a NAP position.. i never did that but alot of my friends did and really learned alot. most hospitals have NAP positions.. you may want to call the human resourse dept at local hospitals.. like sunrise, spring valley, valley , UMC and st rose...good luck and keep me updated

Most of them will hire you after completion of 1st semester. Valley hospitals want 2 semesters done. Most of them pay around $14. It's great experience and I highly recommend it! I love the St. Rose hospitals. I nap for them and they are very flexible with you. Look online at the hospitals to find openings. A lot will become available really soon, since some of us (me included) are graduating and have to quit (State Board rules) by our graduation date.

I do the nurse apprentice up here in Reno and it's a great experience. Wage is 14.50/hr and the amount of experience is great. Plus, you can check out if you like a certain unit or not before you need to apply for new grad positions.

I went on their websites and was looking for positions but I didn't see any. What do they normally list it under? RN, Entry Level? I did find ones under Valley but they look to be affiliated with the adopt-a-student program, and I would like to be an NAP but I don't want to do the adopt-a-student program.

Also, are they flexible with your schedule? Or do they go off of your school schedule and not personal schedule?

Should I call the HR departments?

I won't be done my first semester until December but would like to start looking. Any info is appreciated!

They are usually listed under either Nurse Apprentice, or just NAP. There is usually a larger pool of openings around graduation (Dec. and May) because they need to replace the graduating NAPs.

I also NAP for the St. Rose hospital and they are very flexible. I am limited due to their budgeting as to how many hours I am able to work (1 shift per pay period). Some hospitals will let you work as much as you want, some have minimum hours or shifts you must work per month. Each one is different.

highly recommend finding a nap position at any of the hospitals in las vegas. i currently am employed at sunrise and i have learned more at my job then i have in any clinical setting. it is the best opportunity i have ever received. as soon as you finish your first semester of nursing school start looking for availability in the hospitals/ i heard st. rose is really good as far as nap experience, and from my first hand experience sunrise children's hospital it is awesome.

I currently work as a NAP at UMC and make just under $17/hour. I am learning tons at UMC as a NAP. They give me my own patients and allow me to do everything an RN would do, but there is always an RN assigned to me if I have any questions.

Thanks to everyone for their info. Do NAP positions work 12 hr shifts? It is good to know that there will be an area that I can work in that will help me with my schooling. Now it's just a waiting game to see if I get accepted, I'm going crazy!

at some of the hospitals like sunrise Naps are required to work three 12 hours shifts a month. According to my friend at St. Rose you are required only to work up to 12 hrs a pay period and you can either work a split shift (6 hrs every week) or a full shift (12 hrs every other week). Most hospitals will let NAPS determine there own work schedules so dont worry if the hospitals will work with your school schedule, they will.

Even push meds and hang piggy backs or draw labs?????? Better check with the Nevada State Board of Nursing because I thought NAPS could not under any circumstances hang IV medications or push medication/narcotics, or do diagnostic testings. correct me if I am wrong........

I agree, you learn TONS as a NAP. I love being a NAP and the experience is invaluable. The state board of nursing does set out exactly what a NAP can and cannot do. If you haven't yet seen it, please check it out. I would hate for your chance at licensing be in jeopardy because you were unaware of the restrictions (especially with IV piggybacks and IV push meds) the BON has on NAP's. You still must practice within the scope of practice of a NAP (not an RN).
