Neuro Critical Care - new grad advice

  1. I just started my nurse residency program (new grad RN) and I've been assigned to the neuro critical care unit, which is the step-down unit from neuro ICU.

Any advice for a new grad? Anything I should brush up on before going to the floor? I'm all ears

ETA: I'm still in hospital orientation, so I won't be on the floor until the week of Aug. 10th

I too will start on neuro step down ICU in August. I am also eagerly awaiting any responses to this thread. Also, if anyone could recommend a good neuro book (perhaps from Amazon) that is a good overview for the new grad on a neuro step down icu. Thanks!!

Hey, simplyjenny, hope your experience is going well. I just finished hospital orientation and I've been on the unit for 2 days now. I feel so lucky to have great nurses to work with on my shifts. I'm getting 4 weeks of day shift on the neuro/trauma step-down and 2 weeks night shift on the regular neuro floor.

I've asked my preceptor if there are any books she recommends. She's going to write down some book titles for me this weekend and give me a list. I'll let you know what she says!

Thanks SopranoKris! I would really appreciate that. I am glad to hear you are enjoying your time on the unit! Which floor will you work on after you finish your preceptorship?

I won't know which floor until my 6 weeks is up. They can place us anywhere in the hospital. I've requested critical care, so I'm hoping I can stay on the unit. My goal is to be an ER nurse, but I can't work ER until I complete the ER Fellowship. I need a year on critical care first before I can apply for the ER Fellowship, since they're a Level 1 trauma center.

I will be waiting to see what books you post as well, getting ready to start Neuroscience unit real soon. Thanks and good luck to you finishing up orientation.
