What is the NCLEX like?

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I am still a pre-nursing student so I am a long ways away from taking it but since it is the most important test of my life I want to know as much as possible about it! What is the test like? What kind of questions does it ask? How long does it take? Do most people pass the first time? What are some tips to prepare for it? Anything you can tell me would be very helpful!

One thing's for sure, studying/preparing for it should start from your first day of nursing school. ;)

The test like a computer-adaptive test (CAT), the computer gauges your knowledge and the following questions will be based on your performance (i.e if you're answer correctly, it will give you much harder question, if not, it will give you easier question). However, to pass NCLEX, you must answer HARD questions like application and analysis types of questions. Refer to Bloom's Taxonomy to better understand this one.

It has Multiple Questions type, but it also has alternate-format ones, like Select all that apply (SATA), hot spots, ordered response and drug calculations.

Minimum to answer 75 questions, but you can also go through all the way to 265 max. And you should answer it within 6 hours. I'm talking bout the NCLEX-RN exam.

Use the Saunders text book thru out nursing school and it will you with NCLEX also.

Breathe :). It is too soon to be worried about this! Yes, this test is VERY important. It will test all the knowledge you think you have, you actually do have, and knowledge you did not know you had. But so do ALL the tests you are taking now.Worry about doing your best to get into a program. There are many threads about the NCLEX and I'm sure you can find out a lot about it. Best of luck!
