Question "FOLLOW-UP"

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi nurses!! I'm really confused about questions that contains the word "FOLLOW-UP". Is it looking for a positive or negative response? What does it mean? I'm really confused I'm not sure if it's looking for the right or wrong choice by the patient. Is it the same with "which patient requires more teaching or needs further intervention??" Thanks nurses! I hope someone can help me with my confusion.

Specializes in Med/Surg, LTACH, LTC, Home Health.

An example of follow-up: a patient states that it's ok to eat cake because he/she can take a little extra insulin to cover the blood sugar.

We, as nurses, KNOW that this person needs more education (follow-up) in the management of diabetes.

Another example: A person skips a dose of medication and decides to take a double dose later to make up for the skipped dose. (There can be NO make-up doses; just take the next dose as scheduled.)

Follow-up questions are looking for statements that indicate that the patient does not not understand the instructions that the nurse provided.

Your needing clarification and posting this question here indicates that you needed follow-up to understand follow-up. You know what follow-up is. You just didn't know you knew.

I hope this helps you. Relax and breathe. Don't panic. Good luck on your exam!!!

That's how my teacher thought us, she said ex.... When teach what would require a follow- up... So I would look for a negative answer

Thank you so much for your explanation! So now it's clear to me I'm really confused because Nclex exam contains lots of follow up question.

I grasp the idea but I also had some confusion with the questioning. I got used to "needs further teaching" style that I had to adjust to the whole follow up questions. Thanks for the clarification too!

Sorry, I commented on the wrong post.
