NCLEX: In 7 days, please give me your steps in answering Q's

Remember the very basics.

A lot of scenerios ask what should the nurse do first, and list several actions. ALWAYS ASSESS FIRST!

Prioritizing questions: Remember your ABCs. Always prioritize these in the correct order.

Maslow's hierarchy: KNOW THIS and you will see what is most important for the pt in each scenerio.

NCLEX is by the book: Remember that you can only do NURSING INTERVENTIONS without a doctor's order.

Don't read more into the question than it says, use only the information presented.

What I always did for exams was read the question and answer it in my head before looking at the possible answers provided. Your first instinct is usually right.

I haven't taken the test yet (I'm scheduled for June 19th), but I read in Kaplan that you should assume you have a doctor's order. I guess I'll find out next week for sure.

Also- don't ask questions of a pt that can be answered with yes or no.

I am getting that you need to toss out similar answers. Look at the opposites and its likely to be one of those. Most of the time, if it says call the doc as an option, do that. But be sure to make sure you have done everything you need to do first. My test is on the 30th. Using Lippincott

Kaplan says in NCLEX you always assume you have the orders for any intervention in the answers. same goes for having the equipment and personnel you need. They are magically there.

I think Kaplan also suggested being careful about choosing 'call the doctor' answers, because they want to know what you, the nurse, would do, not the doctor.

Yeah, those ask the doc questions can be tricky. I've only got four days!! Taking tests and doing review q's all day long until Friday. Then I'm going to do absolutely NOTHING that has to do with the NCLEX, except, perhaps, get rid of all these books in my room! Thanks everyone for the help. It's really helped settle me down. I'll keep you posted, and should know my results by Tuesday next week. Then, well, guess I'm gonna have to tell you ... I HAVE to go away to Kauai for eight days. Yes, I know..... woe is me.... lol (woe is my credit card!)

When I took the nclex, one year ago...the "ask the doc questions" almost always had a nursing answer because there is alwalys something that can be done first nursing wise, re: assessment, abcs, etc...just my experience...great advice nenern...good luck!!!
