Here is a mnemonic for maternal. It really helped me remember for delecerations. Just think VEAL CHOP. THE RATIONALS ARE VARIABLE DECELERATION IS BECAUSE THE CORD IS PROLASPED. THE EARLY DEC IS BECAUSE THE FETAL HEAD IS DOWN. THE A IS ALWAYS OMIOUS IN LATE DECELERATIONS AND THE LATE IS OCCURING BECAUSE THE PLACENTA IS NOT GETTING ENOUGH O2.

V- VARIABLE DECELERATION C- CORD IS PROLASPED

E -EARLY DECELERATION H- HEAD OF FETUS

A - ALWAYS O- OMIOUS (LATE DECELERATION

L LATE DECELERATION P - PLACENTA NO O2

Remember that variable decels happen with any cord compression...it's not always a prolapse. Since variables can be okay and a prolapse is an emergency...it's important to realize that it's any type of cord compression. Variables can be pretty common. The key to these...watching how long they last and the HR associated with them.
