Saint Luke's College of Health Sciences - Kansas City

U.S.A. Missouri

Hey! Has anyone applied to St. Luke's in Kansas City for the Fall of 2012? If so, do you know when we should be recieveing our acceptance letters?

Good luck! :)

has anyone gotten their financial aid award letters? Also, did anyone apply for either scholarship? dg

No letter and haven't had a response about the scholarship either.

St Luke's financial aid is done on a much slower timeline than any other school I have attended. They have a small size in relation to many other colleges so they start later. I typically don't receive my financial aid award letter until 2 weeks prior to class.

Also, the deadline for the scholarship application was Dec 2, so it will probably be a month before we hear back about that.

Totally understand! It is super nerve wracking.... It is very frustrating but unfortunately that's how they are ran :(

Hello,

I am a first time user to this website and have been reading many posts. I find this to be an amazing source as I am more than anxious to know if I will make the cut for spring 2014 at SLC. I am currently #14. Do any of you know or believe I have a pretty decent chance on making it or have you known anyone to have made it being around that number? I have gained a little more insight about the registration piece from reading the posts, as I have felt in the dark about many things. Josh is good about updating me on my number, but I feel like a pest when trying to inquire about financial aid, class schedule and ALL that!

Do I have to be BLS certified before I start.... and where could I get that on late notice?

More than anything I want in, but this whole waiting game is a beast. Patience is definitely a virtue.

MichaelaR27, your posts are very enlightening... I appreciate you sharing a bit of your life with your kids, hubby, part time job and ALL, because I have an 18month old and at times I question if I can do this. I have a VERY supportive mother, but still....im a single parent and i have a part time job..that's really flexible but....I don't know.... I just keep praying, that's all I can do

Oh! And if they pull names from the waiting list all the way up til the first day of school, how would that prepare us to get finished with paperwork, books and all that or would they still give us time?

Michaela,

I am new to this forum and I'be found it to be pretty informative. I appreciate all the input you have shared with others.

I am currently on the waiting list as #14 for Spring 2014, would you think I have a decent chance of making it in for January 13th?

Im also glad to hear this is doable considering I have a 1yr old little girl. She is my everything and when I read that you too, have children, its inspiring to believe that I too, can accomplish this.

Welcome to AN. I understand that the wait was stressful. I only put my eggs in the SLC basket, so I would have had to wait another year if I didn't get in. You must take a BLS class before the start of clinicals and they are offering a couple at the school before semester begins. I would begin getting immunizations and certification ready so that if you are called at last minute, it won't be a huge hassle. I think that you need titers for MMR, varicella vaccine, DPT, and TB. There is also a color blind screening that they will give you at school and some other information that will come in a portal via D2L which is the online platform they use (my personal fave.) I have a son and know how hard balancing everything can be. Hang in there and I hope to see you in class. dg

acarson,

Hi, I'm glad you have found this forum helpful! Getting into nursing school is definitely a nerve wracking time!

Being #14 on the waitlist is promising, in my opinion! I have a friend who was waitlisted and she actually started class a couple days after the rest of us did. Several factors go into the waitlist, such as students who are accepted to multiple schools and choose an alternate route, financial aid issues and inability to pay, etc. I'd say your chances are great!

As degratrj said, if I were you I would get started with your background check, immunizations and certifications now. You will NOT be allowed to attend clinical until all of that is complete. I would begin, because you don't want to be accepted and then have difficulty attending because of that.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you! Let me know if I can help with anything!

Degratrj and MichaelaR27, you two have no clue how grateful I am for you both right now! Lol! No, but seriously I appreciate the information. I had no idea I had to be BLS certified. Degratrj, you mentioned there were a couple of BLS classes before semester begins...should I simply call Saint Lukes and speak with the receptionist about it? I'm thinking I will start there to obtain more info. Hopefully I can get good detailed info about it. I am definitely going to get on that ASAP!

I will go ahead and schedule an appointment for my immunizations as well. Can you please tell me exactly who I need to contact for a background check? I would like to get on that as well. If I recall correctly, it seems like I read in a much earlier post that the background check was like $109...is that correct? I just need to know do I go through a specific company or what does the direction.

So I feel like I'm asking a lot of questions and I apologize, but I just want to get as much out the way like you all said, so I won't have the huge hassle. What is the D2L? Is that something you get after you've been accepted or am I privy to that right now? If so, how do I get to it?

Yea MichaelaR27, #14 sounds good, but I just didn't want to get my hopes up so ya know? Do I wait until school starts to begin the financial aid/loan process? I called Financial Aid dept. and its been about a week and still haven't received a phone call back. Do I need to have any money upfront? I just want to be prepared as much as I can possibly be.

Again, from every angle of my heart, I appreciate the information....and I really hope to meet you degratrj. Thanks for the crossed fingers MichaelaR27 ;)

Hi Acarson. D2l is something that you will get after you get in. Along with that will come the info for the background check. It is 109, I think, if you have only lived in one state. More if you have lived in others. About money upfront--I'm not sure what your financial need is so no one can speak to that but the financial aid coordinator. I would say, however, that having a couple thousand up front would mean that you can shop around for the best prices on books and supplies instead of going through the KU bookstore which is much more expensive. There are BLS classes through St. Luke's hospital, too. Just look at the website. They cost the same as the one at the school. There are some great resources to make immunizations cheaper. The KC Care clinic has free TB tests on Wednesday mornings and the public health department has some free immunizations for nursing students too. Have you already started your 6 month Hep B course? If not, get right on that. Three shots over 6 months. Hope that helps.

Oh my goodness!! 6 month Hep B course?! No I haven't. Again, how do I get access to that to get started on it? How do you all find out this information? ha! I looked on the website and didn't see this. Please enlighten me on where do I enroll for this Hep B course.

Are you able to send me the list of books I need so I can shop around now and check prices. You may also email me at [email protected]. Again, you have no idea how grateful I am for the info.

I am scheduled to get my titers already and waiting on return phone call from St. Lukes East for the BLS class :) I told you I was going to get on it quickly. LOL!!
