Losing Hope now that i cant find a job

U.S.A. Missouri

I graduated in Dec 2009. Honestly, I felt lost after school. I questioned my decision to go to nursing school and so I took time to evaluate my choices and my life. I love being around people, I knew i wanted a job where I could help otherr. Now I'm trying to find a job and having the hardest time! Hospitals are telling me they want the newest grads and Im getting passed up! What kinds of places should I be applying to now? Nursing homes? Smaller hospitals? Help! Im losing hope that I will find a job that I love!!!

I cant find a job either.

here...unemployed here too. Graduated in Oct, and still no job.

10 yrs experience and I cant find a job. ALways an excuse...too many jobs on my resume, jobs of short tenure, employment gaps, you name it. AT least when I graduated in 2003, I was able to get right in. I feel very sorry with the droves of unemployed new nurses. Its our racketeering government conspiring with nursing schools to saturate the market and drive wages down. When a doctors office offered me $11/hr, I decided to apply at Walmart. Its really hard not to lose hope, as I am beginning to close the door to nursing, and look for another career. My loans are still unpaid.

i'm sorry to hear you're having a difficult time too! its hard, i feel like i need to defend myself for taking time off after college and for working as a waitress as a part-time college job where i was able to work less, make more money and study my butt off in school. its just sad and frustrating, we've worked so hard to become nurses. the other day i had a customer ask me why i wasnt working as a nurse. he asked me 'When are you going to get a real job? Aren't nurses always in demand?' I almost wanted to cry! I've always been such a hard worker. Not to toot my own horn but I have a great work ethic and i've always been very driven (regardless of what job it is -- nursing student, customer service rep, waitress, you name it) But I just cant get a hiring nurse manager to take the chance on someone who may require more training but would definitely be a hard working employee. what i lack in experience, i definitely make up for in determination to do a good job! wish i could write that on my resume in GIANT LETTERS!

Good Luck you guys! We just need to keep applying to jobs and repeat to ourselves over and over: 'I will get a nursing job!'

The biggest problem is that if you dont know somebody, somewhere, its very hard to get your foot in the door. Even if you get your foot in the door, its unstable. One hospital I worked at shut down. Lots of nurses looking, a few jobs. A hiatus isnt a bad thing. Clueless people continue to think there is a nursing shortage. Best of luck, and keep trying

Just curious to those of whom would be comfortable answering...

where are you looking for work? St Louis...Kansas City...?

where did you graduate from? What level is your degree?

have you checked in where you went to school?

have you tried checking with instructors you might have been close to while going to school?

OMG! This sounds like a nightmare. I've just been accepted in nursing school and I have always believed there is a nursing shortage. Has anyone tried looking in different states? That's what I would do.

Hi! I've been looking the in the st. louis area. I have my BSN. I've done some networking, met people through other nurses, but i keep hearing the same thing: they want a little more experience... :( but i'm just gonna keep applying, someone somewhere has to give me a chance, right?

Have you applied to the Futures program at SSM? Also, don't forget to apply to LTAC, nursing homes, skilled nursing, home health, etc. Lots of opportunity for nurses, you just have to keep trying. You'll land something, just don't give up.

I hope you all that are looking have taken advantage of job fairs and new graduate dinners/meet and greets. I went to meet and greets at Christian Northeast and Depaul (where reps from all of SSM hospitals met with us) and really worked the rooms. I had my resume and cover letter readily available and spoke to reps from various units. I had a job offer within two weeks of my meet and greet for SSM, well before my graduation date. I will be coming up on my first year anniversary in June. It really pays to network. If you don't have a job offer before you graduate, don't let that discourage you. I know plenty of people who got jobs after graduation, sometimes months afterwards. Just apply everywhere you can, and don't just rely on online applications. Sometimes you have to get out and be seen by prospective employers.

Cant find no job for new grad...have applied to every hospital in mo,alton, grantie city,LTAC everywhere....no luck...no call backs.....have been applyn in Texas and get 2 interviews,,,wow
