Hello,

Is there anybody out there that attends BJ College of Nursing in St. Louis? I'm still doing prereqs, but plan on attending there when I am finished. I know they are planning some changes soon (eliminating the ASN program), but was wondering what it's like now, and if you would recommend it.

If Sanford Brown credits are now accepted by Webster and Chamberlain, then that's wonderful news! Although expensive, this is another avenue for future nurses to enter the field as well as be able to continue their educations. I have just always advised nursing students to make sure credits will transfer if they would like to continue with a BSN, MSN, etc., no matter what school they attend.

Ditto...I have read countless times on these boards and was also warned away by another college out of this area when I was contemplating their program...but the caveat to that being: Make SURE you can transfer those courses...and that there would be no guarantee if you were going out of state or elsewhere once you were done. I was also told the same thing about attending the program at BJC when I was looking at that about 2.5 years ago!

This is just wise; it's not a knock against SB if they've got their program straightened out! It's nice to have input from someone who's been there!

I shadowed a position at Barnes a couple weeks ago and when I talked to the supervisor she said they just started a new program that pays for your entire BSN (including books) at BJCON. There is a limit on how many they accept, she said they had 20 in it now. I'm not sure what the stipulations are exactly. I know you have to be there at least a year. But I thought that was very cool.

When I have spoken about difficulty in transferring Sanford Brown credits and hospitals not wishing to hire Sanford Brown grads, my information has come strictly from other quotes on this board from Sanford Brown graduates. I wish I could find the one specific thread so I could refer to it here, but I'm not having too much luck!

I don't think it should be necessary to spend the amount of money Sanford Brown requires to become a nurse. What most people seem to do is go to the community colleges. They get their pre-requisites out of the way, do their English, Psychology, and any other non-nursing courses possible and then their waiting list time is up and they go right into the Nursing program at community college. They get their Associate's degree. So much cheaper than Sanford Brown. Of course, you might be in a hurry to get school behind you and acquire your RN license as quickly as possible. In that case, maybe the expense of Sanford Brown is worth it to you. Best wishes, whatever you decide.

It can be expensive but since i had my science classes transferred in from Fontbonne College I only paid 17 thousand for the entire year and a half, which i chose to do instead of finishing in one year. if I had went to Oak wood college where I initially planned on going the only offer associate degree in nursing after finishing a four year term, and they were a little over 10 thousand a year so i would have been owing 40 grand back instead of 17 grand, but, yes the community college is real cheap, I personally like Florissant Valley over all the rest.

Unless you have attended the nursing schools at all 3 community college campuses, that is a rather broad-sweeping generalization....I attend NS @ Meramec and am very happy there, but couldn't begin to compare to Flo Valley or Forest Park as I haven't attended their programs. The instructors are different (and usually dedicated to the nursing program; not the instructors you take prereqs with), the clinical experiences are different, and the students would be different.

The St. Louis Community Colleges on the whole are wonderful institutions for learning. Coming originally from southern CA, and having graduated from Meramec with my Associate's in General Transfer in '97, I have been VERY impressed with the programs and instructors in all my classes on each campus. I am no less impressed with the nursing program at Meramec!!

I guess my statement can be broad since I took ownership of my statement by stating "personally",I wasnt really seeking approval or disapproval, just commenting independently of anyone elses statement. So yes they are all acceptable to me as far as getting an affordable education but like I said in my opinion I preferred FLO- Valley. I really didnt say what I said to put down anyone elses nursing program.

I wasn't giving approval or disapproval....just stating that unless you can compare the staff, classes, and clinical experiences at EACH individual campus, it's impossible to state that there's a best program between the 3.

I went to BJCON and it was the worst educational experience that I ever received. The professors that educate you have no formal teaching background. They are the worst nurse/professor combination. If you do not understand something they tell you to look it up, they spend as little time trying to improve your knowledge and spend a lot of time off campus. I transferred to another school and received a better education at a better price. DO NOT GOTO GOLDFARB. By the way I am a RNFA and specialize in cardiothoracic surgery. NO thanks to Goldfarb. One more thing...They also told me that you could never work in a hospital unless you have your BSN! LIE. You only make 3-5% more money.
