Barnes Accelerated Prereq Question

U.S.A. Missouri

Published

Hello, all!

New to the forum. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

I'm set to start the Barnes-Jewish Accelerated BSN May/2010. I have prereqs to complete & would love some advice. Out of these, are any suited for an online class? I have been accepted at SLCC. I feel like I'll be more disciplined in the classroom, but due to time to complete these AND having a small child (21 months), a class or two online if it makes sense would be welcome.

I have to take:

-- Anatomy & P 1 & 2

-- General Psyc

-- Human Growth

-- Micro

-- Intro Bio (because micro most everywhere requires)

-- Nutrition

Thanks, again! Hoping the BSN program has some older/non-trad students, too. I live close, so at least my commute is great. (I can walk to campus.)

Tracy,

I have almost the same list of prereqs. to complete which I am currently doing at SLCC. Of the courses you listed, I would think that the psych. classes and nutrition would lend themselves most to being completed online as they are the least challenging (IMHO). I think you could also do some of the other science classes online if you really wanted to. Good luck with your plan!

Thanks! Good luck to you, too. :wink2:

I agree -- nutrition & pysh are opportunities for online perhaps.

I know FloValley (SLCC) has online courses, but I do not know about those you listed (of course some have labs)

I am looking into Barnes Jewish program too, and am wondering what education/classes did you have to have (other than the ones you listed) to get accepted there? Will they accept you before those classes are completed?

Thanks

I would say psych, human growth, and nutrition online would be feasible... although honestly they might be more challenging online than in a real class setting.

I took nutrition at Flo Valley and it was way easy. I also took growth and development at Forest Park and that was the easiest class I have ever taken in my life... honestly, we had 1 test which he gave us half the answers to. I am thinking that online classes would have to contain more content from the books, homework, etc in place of "in class discussions" which accounted for most of the grades in those classes.

I agree....I took the Human Growth online and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a text that had to be read and several TV courses we had to watch, but it wasn't killer at all and would lend itself to your situation very well. I can't imagine that Nutrition would be too horrible, and if you enjoy the subject, Psych shouldn't be a problem at all.

Those science classes can be killer though unless it's a strength of yours. I know too many people who struggled through the classroom version of these and would not recommend the chance that you will get low grades or need to repeat them unless you know you should do well and are already familiar with the topics covered.

Bio would be "iffy". If you've had it fairly recently (say in high school) and know you're fairly proficient, you'd probably do well. If it's been some time or you struggled with the topic previously, then get theeself to a classroom!

Good luck!! :yeah:

Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it! Saymo82, if you can remember your professor for Growth & Dev., let me know. (Just in case I have a lot of choices.)

I think I'm going to defer my start date to Sept '10 from May. So I have plenty of time to actually attend classes vs rush/online. Though, I agree, I think I could handle psyc & nutrition online...& I may try...but no WAY for the science classes. No way! I haven't taken biology since high school. And to kinda answer Marie at the same time, I have a BA (Journalism) and an MA (Media Arts) -- neither of which required much beyond some "rocks for jocks" science classes. Astronomy! Environmental something or the other. So...not sure how Barnes decides to accept, etc., but my undergrad & grad were in no way a big "win" for this degree because all are liberal arts. If your GPA is good, I would think they'd seriously consider you. That's all I've heard.

And, yes, you are accepted based on the assumption (and proof through transcripts) that you pass the prereqs.

I hope I can pass microbiology & anatomy. :)

If you're motivated and able to prioritize your time and studying, you'll do fine. I might suggest taking those through FP if you have the option. Don't know specific instructors, but I took micro there with a adjunct faculty who's no longer there.

I also would recommend FP for your pre-reqs. I took my A&P II class there and loved it. I might have had the most challenging prof there, but he was awesome and I left the class with confidence that he was helping to prepare me for what was to come in nursing school.

I'm all about the easy A in non science classes, but for the A&P and Micro I think the easy A is a detrement to your future success in nursing school.

I would disagree somewhat. While it's helpful in NS to have the basics down from these courses, they are not vital to success in nursing school. The big picture and the basics however, are good to have.

For FP, you guys mean St Louis Comm College at Forest Park, right? (I'm still on a learning curve...having only lived here since Sept.)

Thanks!
