Applying for UMSL's 2010 accelerated BSN program

U.S.A. Missouri

hey guys! i was just wondering who all on this website is planning on transferring from stlcc and/or applying to the accelerated bsn program @ umsl. does anyone know if we need letters of reccomendation? i read on some other posts about them and some sort of paper but the nursing receptionist said that i didn't need either. i've been talking to a advisor @ the college of nursing but there hard to catch up with without a appointment. i figure we can exchange info and ask questions to each other. :typing

thanks in advance!

oh, and if you all don't mind me asking, how in the heck are you guys planning to pay for that 30k bill???.... i got about :twocents: so far!!!!

For the CPR, the American Heart Association, www.americanheart.org, has a locator feature for classes. I am taking mine Thursday night at the Mills, $60, no shared manequins.

Also, your Hep B, if you need it, is free, at least for now through the county health department. I live in St Charles County, and when I called to see if they were cheaper than insurance, they told me there is a state initiative to get health care providers vaccinated, so as long as the state funds the program, if you tell them you are a nursing student, it's Free! I like that. I took my acceptance letter along, just in case, but they never asked.

If you have not started your Hep B series, get started. The second shot is 30 days after the first, then the third is 6 months after that. I have to figure out what that means for me since I will finish the series after we start classes....

Actually I an enrolled to take the CPR course at Flo Valley, where I am finishing u my prereqs. Thanks for the info about Hep B, I live in Saint Louis County and contacted one of their health centers, and was told it cost $5 if if funds are still available and I have to provide proof that I am in nursing school.

To Libra_8, thanks for the info I went to continuing education office and registered for the course, it cost $60! Yeah, I would love to meet up for lunch, if I have time, lol.

yea i kno what cha mean! when is your CPR class? and as far as the lunch goes, when r ur classes up here?

Hi all!

I was hoping someone could shed a little light on what someone coming into the accelerated BSN program can expect. What does a typical week look like during our first summer there?

How much class?

How much clinicals?

How much studying/study grouping?

Is this a forty hour a week, a 50 hour a week, a 60 hour a week committment?

Thanks!

Greg

Thanks Greg! Thats a great question! R U starting this May?

Yes, I have been accepted in the May class. I just really haven't seen anything about what kind of workload we are facing. It would be nice to have some idea of what we are facing.

Hey everyone! A little over 2 months left...exciting! Did anyone set up their appointment with their advisor yet to register in April? I set mine up for April 7, but I don't know my registration date, but they said you can pre-register to hold your spot I think.

Greg...the summer class schedule is up on MyView so you can kind of see what your schedule will be like. If I am looking at the right classes (there is a sample plan of study under info about the accelerated program on umsl's site) it looks like we will either have Wed. or Fri. off depending on your classes. Those will probably be filled up with clinicals eventually though. It looks like it is 16 credits the first semester, so we will probably be in class until late afternoon most days. I assume after class, we will have to go home and study for the next day. So...fun times! Haha! I don't know much about clinicals...I heard we have to test out in the lab and we actually start at hospitals around week 6. This is all what I heard...I could be wrong about it all. It's going to be a lot of work though...

BTW...I was wondering who has experience at all in the hospital setting? I have none and am kind of nervous about that. Does anyone work in a hospital?

Hi! I have been wondering about the schedule myself. I did look online at the class times but i would have thought that the accelerated bsn students would all have the same schedule...... but idk. I do have a meeting with susan on the first for my schedule. Which classes r u planning on asking for? I would like to have the same classes with you so ill know ill have study buddy!

Hey! When I looked at the schedules, it seemed like all 48 students had the same lecture class but that they then divide us into two groups for lab...which makes sense or it would be super crazy in there! lol I'll PM you again about the class schedule because there is something about a professor I don't want that I don't think we are supposed to say on here! lol

oh ok i didnt notice that about the class sizes. ill be lookin for ur PM!

Hey guys! I am getting really excited! I called the college of nursing and they said I couldn't have an appointment to register for classes until after April 19th. That might be because I'm new to UMSL, so I can't register on my own yet... I don't know. But I am registering with an adviser on the 19th. I also have an appointment with Susan for this Tuesday, mostly to get a tour and to get some questions answered. I will ask about clinicals and schedules and report back on here. Anything in particular you guys want me to ask while I'm there?

Hey Lacey! I'm actually up at the nursing school on Tuesdays for nutrition class...just curious what time your appointment is with Susan?
