I am an RN and was just told that I am being laid off. How do I go about finding another job? It seems the job market for RNs isn't as strong as it was a few years ago and the economy isn't helping. Hospitals are really struggling to correct their hemorrhaging budgets.

Wondering if I should look into training for something outside of nursing? Any thoughts

I'm so sorry to hear of your news. Is there a rival hospital / VA facility / state agency/ nursing home / home health agency / placement agency / corporate spot, etc that is hiring near you? Are you willing to drive / be flexible with your hours and days to get a new position? http://www.minnesotaworks.net/ is the workforce center's site - job searches (hospitals often post jobs, as do smaller facilities), unemployment info, etc. is all available here.

Right now I have been offered severance but I am concerned about what will happen once severance has run out. I have never been without a job so now I am very skeptical about where to turn. I will look into your suggestions and try to determine where I can land that also offers some job security.

Do nursing homes and SNFs in your area hire RNs? These places hire RNs in my area, and are always desperate for any staff with licensure.

It is very scary. I have been looking but I think the difficulty will be finding a position that isn't direct care which I haven't done in quite a while.

Yes, I do live in the Twin Cities. And you are right, I have seen many jobs posted just not what I want. I am no longer at the bedside doing direct care and currently am not looking to return to the bedside. I do have a master's degree but I don't want to go into management either. I would love to do the role of house supervisor. I am hopeful that I will find something soon. It's just really uncomfortable especially in the state that the economy is knowing in as little as 3 months I may not have an income.

Hi- am new here, but this caught my eye!

I was laid off last May, have been working disability/case management/insurance type jobs for 15 yrs. This is the 7th or 8th time I have been laid off doing these type of jobs, and am now trying to get back into patient care. My hands on background is mental health/chem dep. I have applied to numerous positions since June, only 2 interviews! The last one @ Fairview said I need to go through RN refresher course before they could hire me, even though it is mental health work. Only one I could find is Normandale, and they are not yet accepting applicants for their January program. Any others here in the Twin Cities or close by that anyone knows of?

Another option might be temp agency work to get hands on experience. Anyone work with any agency they would recommend?

I think many of the community colleges offer the RN refresher course. I know that the agencies want someone with recent hosptial or LTC experience. Fairview has many needs for mental health and I have a friend who manages one of the mental health units at Fairview who is always looking for RNs. Mental health patients are starting to come in with multiple medical issues also so oftentimes nurses with acute care or medical surgical background are desired. Good luck to you.

Many hospitals are having to cut back and unfortunately it is the supervisory positions that are cut back the most. If you do not want to do bedside, would you be interested in home care? Clinic? The most jobs will be bedside, and I guess you would have to search a bit to find something that isn't bedside. At my hospital, they just cut out quite a few supervisory/manager positions.
