[color=#a52a2a]there isn't a universal ventilator brand used in australian states.

i have a large background of using puritan bennett's (love love love) and as we're moving to the us next may i want to be prepared. which brand is the most predominantly used ventilator there?

i have had little to no use of draeger's and hate the avea's. :nurse::D

[color=#a52a2a]at my last position i was expected and bullied to be in a managerial/senior position in our icu as i have my master's in critical care. will the same be expected of me elsewhere?

I think it depends on the facility. My facility uses Servo i's primarily, unless we need high frequency oscillatory ventilation. But there are several models of ventilators in use in the US- some older, some newer, several different manufacturers.

Almost all ventilators operate in the same way, as far as nursing responsibilities. It's the respiratory therapist's job to know how to operate the ventilator, as long as you know how to care for an intubated patient, you'll be able to adjust no matter what the model of the vent.

we have servo's and draeger's here...

The Servo-i, Evita XL and the PB 840 are three of the most common ventilators in the United States. However, you may run into many different types throughout the United States including older types such as the PB 7200. What do you mean by having no use of the Drager? The Evita XL is a fine ventilator with many pros, especially when it comes to monitoring lung mechanics IMHO. The flow sensor is prone to breaking if not handled properly, but that's the only clear pitfall I can appreciate.

the nurse looking after the patient looks after and changes every setting in the ventilator as the patient's condition changes. do the nurses not have 100% control of the ventilators in the usa- seems weird and disappointing to me as it is the part i love the most of being an icu nurse.

[color=#b22222]what do you mean by having no use of the drager?

i have never looked after a patient who is being ventilated by a draeger ventilator, i have never even turned one one so i have no idea how to adjust the settings as required.

apart from the pb 840 i have never heard of the ventilators you have all mentioned but i suppose i will learn a lot when i arrive.

thanks everyone :)

We use Viasys Vela vents where I work. All touchscreen & some can even run Bipap modes with a mask
