SCU (special care unit)???

Just wondering if anyone had information on what a SCU (special care unit) is??

Any information will do!

At my hospital the SCU is a step-down ICU essentially. Nurse-patient ratio is between the floor and the ICU. I imagine it varies though, so I would check with the particular hospital.

I know of only one hospital over here that uses a SCU in their surgical ward. Basically it is the same as a medium care unit, high dependency unit, step-down unit but their unit is reserved for surgical patients only.

I agree with hiddencatRN it is very variable what types of care you find in those units. Some units do almost everything while others have added monitoring and that's about it.

Thank you for the posts! I did a bit of research, and believe it is an ICU step down. So guessing that it will have patients not well enough for medsurg but well enough to get out of the ICU...
