Hey everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself as I am a new member of there boards. My name is Mark and I work in an ICU in a medium size hospital in Western New York. I have been a nurse for 8 years and have always worked in an ICU. I like the discussions I have seen here and the support you give one another. I hope I can contribute a little and also learn from you. My first question is are there any other hospitals on earth besides ours where nurses are working 8 hour shifts in the ICU?

I think 99 pct. of all hospitals in Denmark have 8 hours shifts, some hospitals have 12 hours shifts on weekends. In that way you dont have to work as many weekends (usually 3 out of 8, but with 12 hours shift it is 2 out of 8)

In Norway the most common form is 8 hours in daytime and 10 hours on the nightshift. You work every third weekend.

hey mark!!! WNY here too! I work in Rochester and we do both 8 and 12 hrs. you can be 36 or 40 hr. Very few if any people do 5 eight hour days. Our usual is two 12's and two 8's.

welcome to allnurses.com from sunny bangkok... :balloons:

i have students over here that will work days and nights the same day and then pms the following day. that is a very typical schedule over here. also one student who works 12 hour shifts only at her facility and she is actually permitted to do two 12s back to back, which translates to 24 hours straight.

yuch.................
