IMC for a new grad

Specialties MICU

Published

I'm graduating in a month and I have an interview for a job in an Intermediate Care Unit. My dream is to work in the ICU. So my question is, is this a good place to start? During my ICU rotations I heard a lot of the ICU nurses talking negatively about IMC,but then I have also heard a lot of positive things about starting that unit as well. So I'm just trying to get some other perspective.

Thanks

It will be hard work, but you will learn a ton.

I started in the IMU, learned a lot, made the transition to ICU much easier. I am glad I did it.

Don't worry about what others say, just take care of your patients no matter where you are.

I'm working in an IMC and love it! The orientation was hard, the patients challenging and I have seen a level of ICU material. Many of my patients are transferred up to ICU or down from ICU or I'll get med/surg floor patients transferred up to me. It has been a great balance between having only 1-2 critical patients but not having 4 to 5 not-so-sick patients. I would highly recommend IMC. I think its a great way to get your feet wet and challenge yourself!
