Wayne State University, DET Waiting for Response

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hello, I am applying to Wayne State University College of Nursing in Detroit, Michigan for fall 2010. I have completed all of my requirements to be considered for an interview/ admissions (my application is complete). How long will it take to hear a response from WSU CoN regarding an interview and or acceptance notice?

Well one day down. I really enjoyed the session withthe Student Nurse Association. It was nice to get some honest answers from students who have have been there. Also glad we don't have to wear the white clinical pants I've been reading so much about. I can't even imagine trying to keep those clean.

I can't believe if felt like forever for orientation to get here, now it seems like it will be forever until classes start. I can't wait, but I suppose I should really relax and enjoy the last of my social time and R&R for a very long time!!!

Congrats to all of you who have started your first year of nursing school!!! How exciting - I know I look forward to being in your shoes soon!

Would anyone mind sharing your details? GPA, volunteer/work experience, TEAS (if you took it for another program) - any info at all for the rest of us looking to be where you are?

Thank you so much! And congrats again!

I can share my info!

TEAS: 81%

Previous Undergrad GPA: 2.9 (double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology)

Prerequisite GPA (3.9 - without any retakes and no classes taken at Wayne)

No healthcare experience. No volunteer experience.

With my application I submitted a resume and an essay (neither of which were required)

In addition to the required prereqs I took pathophysiology (a course you will take first semester of the program unless you are excused for having already taken it)

That's all that I can think of. Hope this helps!

I am in the CD2 program, so it's a little different than if you are applying to the traditional program. I have a BA in Communications and I think my prereq GPA was 3.8. I did take both pathophysiology and pharmacology before I applied. Transfer credit is determined by a few factors including: school taken, semester, and syllabus. However, I do believe I read on their website that they give you credit for nursing classes you take when they are determining your acceptance and I believe these two give you a little extra boost. I will tell you I took patho at a local CC and it was an amazing experience. I took Pharm at a local CC and I couldn't wait to take it as WSU and it was worth the wait! The pharm class we are in is awesome. It's not easy with the other class load, but you will learn so much! As CD2's this year we did not have to take TEAS. I did have some volunteer experience in healthcare and I also took a CNA class and a phlebotomy course. I received my interview date before I shared my volunteer experience, CNA class and phlebotomy course. I also turned in a resume and letter of recommendation, but that was after my interview. I think the bottom line with getting an interview is GPA, however you can get an advantage by taking what they consider nursing classes (like pharm and patho) and just b/c they give you credit for admission doesn't mean you will get transfer credit. Don't just take my word for it, do some due dilligence and talk to an advisor. Once you get the interview I believe the interview is make it or break it. Take the time to review their website, come prepared with 3-5 questions. The interview is only about 10 minutes so it's your time to put your best foot forward. Thus far, the program has been exciting, intense and relentless, but I believe it's the best nursing program in Michigan and one of the best in the country. One other thing to consider, I would apply to at least two schools. You want to have a back up. WSU only admitted 48 CD2 and 48 Traditional students this year. I have heard some crazy numbers about how many applied like something around 1500+ (not sure how accurate this is), but I suggest considering options. Good luck to you. I know it's exciting and nerve racking to be in the application process.

This was INCREDIBLY insightful and helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to share that, as well as for the suggestions!

Hi ! Im going to apply to the traditional nursing program for fall 2012. But I'd like to know a few things.

1)Is you acceptance just based on your GPA ?

2) is you acceptance really affected if you repeated a class but got an "A" the second time ?

3) what is the owest gpa that a personc an get accepted with ?

4)Would it help you in getting accepted if you have lots of volunteering experience (specifically in the hospital) and have recommendation letters ?

Any tips and advice would eb greatly appreciated ! Thank you

Hello,

I do believe acceptance is based highly on gpa, I had I believe a 3.6 but from what I hear many students had higher than that.

They say you can send in a resume, letter of recommendation ect..but that helps only if you are tied for a spot with another student (I didn't send one)

I actually had a "c" in a prereq and I was strongly advised not to repeat the course and to add I transfered in I took no previous class at Wayne.

Some type of medical experience will help even volunteering, during my interview when they asked about previous experience and I was able to share my medical experience you could tell they became very interested in me.

This is an amazing program so far, good luck!

Hey Britt2007! I go to Wayne state right now and am applying to their Fall 2012 program. Good job on getting in to the program! I actually haven't had the chance to meet anyone that's actually "in" the program and would really like to have the opportunity to talk to someone who's in the program. Would you mind sharing contact info such as email? Thanks!

Hi there all-

I just had my interview for the cd2 program at Wayne State and was wondering if anyone here could speak to the chances of getting accepted after the interview is complete? Thanks so much!

Hi,

You already had your interview? When was it? Are they only offering one interview day? I thought that we weren't going to hear back until June about interviews... I went to the informational session and I believe they said that they will interview about 150 for the 48 seats or almost everyone with a prereq GPA above 3.5.

Yeah I had my interview last week. From what I've read on this blog, it seems like there are multiple interview dates through June. They said we'd hear back about admissions decisions by late June. So about a 1 in 3 chance huh?...here's hoping! Good luck to you!

Hey there WSU people,

I just got notified I was invited for an interview for the traditional BSN program.. Anyone else out there? I'm ecstatic of course, but now the anxiety is starting to creep up. I was hoping someone could give me a hint about what type of questions they ask? Any information would help! Thanks!
