university of detroit mercy second degree program

U.S.A. Michigan

I am thinking about going to Mercy's accelerated second degree program but I hear they lose many people during the year due to grades. Is that true? Is it too fast and should I consider a 2 year program? I am a good student but I'd hate to spend all that money then not make it as they don't allow anyone to retake a class so I hear as other schools do. I am open to all feedback. Thank you.

I am also from CA and thinking about applying to U of D's program. What part are you in? Why you coming back to Detroit?

I live in Pasadena, CA. What city do you live in? My husband and I are moving to Michigan because he'll be teaching at UofM. I'm planning on applying to UofM and EMU's second degree programs as well, but if I get accepted into UDM, I'd rather go there since I'd be able to start in January.

Living in the Ann Arbor area and commuting to Detroit is certainly doable. I'd bet the number of people who do it now (for other jobs) is in the thousands, if not tens of thousands.

In my class we had people who came in from that area and even some who were further west.

Just know that it does snow here and if we have a hard winter it can really add time to your drive. One to two hours each way is certainly possible if conditions are bad enough. And as far as the school is concerned conditions are almost never bad enough to justify missing class, or heaven forbid clinicals.

Luckily people in this area usually do remember how to drive in the winter and we clean up and shake off most snows pretty quickly.

I know I drove about 25 miles for most of my clnical placements, some people had an hours drive in good weather. But all of us made it, and I can only think of a couple of times when anyone actually missed a clinical day (usually due to family emergencies).

All in all I'd say you should be fine.

Good Luck.

I just heard through the grape vine that the class that just started lost 18 people in the first two weeks? Do you know if that is really true? That is A LOT lol

Wow, that is crazy if it is true---I only know someone who just finished in Dec and someone due to Graduate this May.

I start in May and we have our first meeting this Friday--looking forward to meeting others starting then as well!

How did your friends like the program? I'd really love to hear. I don't know if it's true or not, but someone I know says 18 people didn't make it past the 2 week assessment class which I hear is hard and very quick.

Please let me know how your friends thought of the program and if it's okay, I'd love to hear your feedback once it starts.

Thanks.

jkb1999,

I couldn't go to the orientation (I have to go to the makeup one in April). Would you mind telling me a little about it?

Thanks!

Sophia,

The meeting was a lot of "warning" you how difficult this year is going to be. We did get the class schedule so that we were able to register afterwards--but we are all in classes together except the first 2 weeks it is spllit up with some in morning and some in afternoon--nurse assessment course. Then we start into the regular courses and clinicals this semester will be Th/F and you could be day or afternoon shift but won't find where or when till end of April. Clinclas start June 3rd.

Also got our book list and supplies--I got my white scrubs that day and my stethoscope from a store near my house. Also were told that the 2-3 week we will be required to take and pass a medicical math test with 90% (given 3 chances) and they handed out some info on that.

Also got our cost breakdowns with Grants and if you qualified for FAFSA.

Let me know if you have any specific questions that I might be able to answer :-)

Thank you jkb1999 for all the info and I'd love to hear how it goes as i am thinking about attending in the 2011 class, not sure about Jan or May.

Someone who just finished the program told me 18 people didn't pass the 2 week assessement class which I guess starts the program. Did you hear anything about that? Maybe they got it wrong, but that seemed like a lot.

What type of math is it? Was that a link you had posted?

Thanks again.

jkb,

Thanks so much! I was kind of bummed not to be able to go to the orientation, but there wasn't much I could do about it.

I have one question about the class schedule. I just want to make sure I register for the correct classes, and the school hasn't emailed me back yet, probably because they're really busy right now. (understandably!!)

Are these the correct classes for the first semester?

2050, 2550, 2560, 2710, 2800, and 3380? Is there anything I have missing or incorrect there?

Thanks!!

Sophia,

I know this might be a lot to ask, but I am thinking about going there in Jan or May 2011. Any way I can hear how you are enjoying the program or not enjoying it? My direct email is [email protected] if you want to email me directly. I'd be so grateful!!!
