OU ABSN Interviews for May 2011 Cohort

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hi guys! Interviews started today for the May 2011 cohort, and I think I was one of the first few to interview. I know we can't talk about specific questions that were asked during the interview, but I just wanted to see if anyone would like to share their reactions/experience here.

I personally felt pretty good, I did get one "I love your answer!" so that made me feel a little more secure:D since I felt like I stumbled on this one other question. I did feel a little rushed since they told me the interview would be super short right in the beginning  (did anyone else feel that way?) I didn't get a clear answer on where we will be having clinicals/classes though....

I'm sure it will be another month after interviews end until we all get mailed acceptance letters.

Any thoughts you would like to share?.....

Thats crap nrsstudent!!! I would have thought applying for the second time would help secure a spot since you are obviously willing to wait and are doing it for the right reasons. Wow I'm shocked!! Makes me not want to re-apply!!

I would assume they shortened interviews because of the high volume of applicants but how can you judge someone in a short 10minutes?

Does anyone know how many people applied this time? Or how it works if someone didnt turn in their deposit? Do they call someone that had a rejection letter?? Because they said we should have all heard by Saturday. I hate this!!!

Nrsstudent - I'm so sorry that you didn't get in and didn't receive any feedback. It makes me nervous about applying again. I have TONS of hospital experience and I thought my essay was good. I know my interview wasn't top notch, simply because I felt rushed and like ou said "another name on some paper". This whole process sucks. I have been trying to get into a nursing program for the last 2 1/2 years with no luck. I would have applied for a traditional prorgam at Schoolcraft, but they told me not to waste my time. That I would have a "better chance at getting into a 2nd degree program". Well, they were wrong. Flat wrong. This is heartbreaking. My husband has been putting off earning his masters degree because I am still trying to get into school somewhere. Ugh.

Prettygirl - I think that if someone doesn't accept a spot, they just have a smaller class. Or maybe they move people up from the next cohort. I don't think they would have trouble doing that. There are definitely people who would be willing to move up and start sooner.

I will apply once more, but I'm not sure I can put my life on hold much longer. Like nrsstudent, I'm taking out loans to pay for school. At some point those loans have to be paid back. Now I am just wondering what I will do if I don't get in next time.

so then do you think when we interviewed for May 2011 they also started to fill Fall2011 at the same time??

I think this process is so messed up!! If you meet all the criteria and show a passion for nursing you should be able to be on a waiting list.

I feel the same way about the loans. I'm thinking of dropping Micro and Patho that I'm signed up for in the Fall. At this point I dont know if its worth the risk to take them and never get in.

Does anyone know when our applications have to be in??

To Adamsmami or anyone else who got excepted:

Do you have any tips or input on what to include in your goal statement? I too found the interview very

unprofessional as the two ladies who interviewed me joked through the entire interview. They joked about everything from their matching Easter colored outfits to the fact that I wouldn't be the only "older" student in the class to what was I planning on doing with my daughter while I was in school. They to led me on like I was going to be accepted like my advisor and I felt they used me for their humor that day.

Like others who have posted I would have gotten on a wait-list at Schoolcraft over 1 1/2 years ago for their tradional program would I have none it was not possible to get into any 2nd degree programs. It's ironic that a program called 2nd degree should focus on excluding those who truly need/want a second degree.

Anyway, I am trying to decide on whether to take the three Nursing school courses in hopes of that making me look better for the next time I reapply.

I'm at Schoolcraft this morning attempting to get on their waitlist for their regular nursing program and I am told it now has a 5 year waiting list.

Does anyone know of a school you can get into anywhere else in the country. At this point I would entertain going anywhere if I can start soon.

Take care everyone.

A tip for those needing to take Microbio. or A&P try ---- for hybrid courses at Schoolcraft. I got

4.0's and really enjoyed the classes. Do not take A&P w/----- at OU, the

worst professor I have ever experienced.

Prettygirl,

I think they pick 50 or whatever, with the knowledge that some won't take their offer. Then I think they interview for the next cohort and offer some of the unfilled spots from the previous cohorts to those who inquire (sp?). I'm not sure though. It seems to be that way.

Nnarod - I am taking classes there with the hopes that I can "show" them that I can do the coursework at their institution. I sure hope it works.

I emailed the advisor to ask when we can submit our applications and when the next round if interviews might be.

I am sorry for everyone who did not get in - me included. However, I do have to thank all of you for your honesty about applying, multiple times applying, etc. This was my first time applying. I was laid off in January of 2009 and decided to pursue my passion - nursing. I have taken out loans, too, to pay for this. Luckily, I found a pretty good job in my field and, now, I am letting my husband pursue his masters while I put this dream on hold for a bit. I also spoke to my dad, who is a doctor here in Michigan, about my rejection this weekend and he told me that new nurses are having a hard time finding jobs here. So, I am just going to wait it out for a few years until the "fad" of being a nurse fades. This is not to say that everyone here is not qualified or does not have a passion for nursing. I just know quite a few people who look to nursing as the latest and greatest thing out there - like a guaranteed paycheck.

I, too, really felt that OU's process was shady, unprofessional and the interview process questionable for being a second degree program.

I know of a friend who applied to the University of Tampa for nursing school (no prior nursing experience or anything) and got in immediately. I know that might be a little difficult for some of us, but there are programs out there. Has anyone checked out University of Toledo? I think they have the 7 year requirement for classes, but it is worth a shot. There is also MSU, CMU, Grand Valley State University, Madonna University (I have another friend who just did the traditional RN program there).

Keep your heads up guys! WE CAN DO THIS!!!

I got a reply back and she said since our pre-reqs are done we can follow the old requirements. Although I'm a little skeptical that it will be sorta frowned upon if my gpa is lower than a 3.2. But I cant afford anymore loans to redo anything at this point.

I agree that nursing is the new fab. Which sucks for us because we want to do it for all the right reasons. I'm sure theres plenty of people who got in on pure luck and just want to make good money fast.

I know most schools are competitive on GPA and look to see how many times you have taken a course. I would be immediately crossed off this list because im under a 3.2 and redid a couple classes I took a couple years ago for undergrad.

Heres to wish full thinking that it will be our turn next round!!!

I'm at Schoolcraft this morning attempting to get on their waitlist for their regular nursing program and I am told it now has a 5 year waiting list.

 I've heard of loooong wait lists like this before, but I'm curious how many people will REALLY wait that long. There are many people on this forum alone who do not want to wait that long and are already pursuing other opportunities, which ultimately leads them to drop out and free up spots in the program(s). My guess is that advisors tell applicants this extraordinary wait list time so that they aren't given false hope; if advisors say "it's a 2 year wait" and it ends up being longer than that, that might be enough to deter applicants from that school entirely. But if they say 5 years, that may offer some kind of "realistic" expectation. But I digress.

So - does anyone know of someone who has actually waited the FULL wait list time? (For any program with a wait list, that is.) It's an interesting statistic to examine.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I wish everyone the best of luck in getting into a program! :nurse:

Does anyone know when the next round of interviews might be held? I noticed that there were interviews in March 2010 and July 2010 (of course!), so does that mean that they might be held in November - before the holidays? I am just curious.

I was thinking November too. I dont see them doing it in December with classes ending. Does anyone know when we have to submit or stuff again by?

Hi all.

Is anyone else taking the NUR220 or NUR227 courses this fall? I was thinking it would help on getting in. Your thoughts??

I hope so nnarod. :) Anyone submit their new appication yet?
