Oakland Community College--is it easy to get into their RN program?

U.S.A. Michigan

I'm attending this school finishing up my pre reqs are they pretty competitive to get into?

All nursing programs are hard to get admitted. At the moment nursing is HOT and everyone wants to become a nurse. You have to get A's in all classes. Right now I have all A's and 2 B's in my pre-reqs, I have two other classes to take and I have to get A's in those to keep my GPA around 3.9-3.8... You can't have anything less...

It's challenging... Wish you all the luck..

Thanx. I'll be applying at universities, I hear they are a bit easier to get into right?

unfortunately, they are not. they evaluate your transcripts, so gpa matters [focusing on prerequisites & sciences] + essay(s). they are also highly competitive. the "easiest" nursing schools to get into normally are those who use waitlisting. if you complete/pass the classes and other requirements you're in. of course, you have to wait 1-2 years before you can start.

Well, I'm considering going out of state, possibly Ohio or any University where this isn't such a long waiting list. I can't see myself waiting 1-2 years just to start a program, no telling what might happen in my life in that long of a time span.

There's a college in Ohio called Mercy College of Northwestern Ohio. They have a two year program, as well as a four year program. They do not have a waiting list but you do have to complete more pre-reqs than you would have for one of the local CC's.

It kind of seems that youre looking for something quick and immediate. In this economy and with Nursing being hot, you're not going to find anything quick. In any situation it will take you at least a year or more to finish your pre-reqs. The best thing to do is research different schools and what they offer, commit to that school and bang it out.

GOOD LUCK TO YA!!! :heartbeat

I'm a first year student in the Nursing Program at OCC and I didn't have to wait a year to get in. I was done with my pre-req's in August of 2007, applied in September of 2007 and got accepted in March of 2008. I took pharmacology in May to get that class out of the way and then started in September. So, it all depends on when you finish your pre-req's. I don't think it's easy at all to get into any Nursing programs. OCC is tougher than everyone thinks. We can't get below 80% in our classes. If you do, you fail. I have lecture, lab and clinicals which is 4 days a week and there is A LOT to do. I start my OB class tomorrow and from just looking at the syllabus, it's going to be tough. If you keep your grades up in your pre-req's, you should be fine. OCC just changed the grading system this past Fall. Before you could get a C and pass but now the lowest you can get is a B-. We were told that it was because graduate students that took the NCLEX were not passing as well as they should so they raised the "bar" so to speak. If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

Yes.. Lat semester the cut off was a 3.8.. All Nursing programs are competitive, bring your A game to every class. :p

what do you mean by last semester? do you mean last years 2008/2009 applicants? or applicants that will be accepted for 2009/10. Last year the cut off was 3.4, the extra students accepted to the accelerated program helped drop the cut off GPA .

i didnt think they had released the GPA's for this comming year.

The cut off for the traditional program was a 3.8 for acceptance for fall 2008/2009. At the time I called the Nursing Office the acclerated program hadn't been decided. I don't think the cut off GPA has been announced for this coming 2009/2010 class because acceptance letters haven't been sent out.

I heard (from the counselor who does the info sessions) that last year the cut off was 3.45 for the accelerated program and 3.6 for the traditional program.

I'm a first year nursing student that started last fall. Last year's cut off for the Traditional route was 3.612. That's what it stated in my acceptance letter last March. The accelerated program's cut off was around 3.8. What happens is that they send the first 216 acceptance letters out. After that they will send an offer for you to apply to the accelerated program. I forget how many spots are available, maybe 50- 100? I don't remember. Then, when those spots open up they send out more acceptance letters for the traditional route. So, the GPA all depends on who has applied to the program and what their GPA is. Good Luck everyone! :nurse:

I heard that at Mid-michigan cc you can get right in to the program. A girl in one of my classes told me that her gpa wasn't good enough for occ but she could get right into mmcc. Not sure where that is but I think it might be in clare.

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me what you study for the math test before getting into the program.
