What were the gender ratios in your nursing classes?

Nurses Men

Published

I'm a 24 year old male entering an accelerated BSN program at Umass in September. Although it has very little to do with my desire to go into nursing, the gender discrepency (supposedly 93%-7% in the workplace) is certainly a nice fringe benefit. Did you guys find the gender ratio to be very favorable to heterosexual males?

We have 6 guys in a class of 21. All are heterosexual.

Specializes in ICU.

4 guys out of 26 students in my program, and all are heterosexual, to my knowledge anyways.

Specializes in Addiction / Pain Management.

3 guys to 32 females.

40 students in one class 5 of them guys including myself. The difference between me and the other ones, they really seemed like they meant to be nurses. I still feel like I'm not sure if I fit in.

In my evening/weekend program class, there were 3 guys (incl me) out of 32 total. For the larger program at my school, out of roughly 120 there were about 8 guys.

Nationally, the ♂ : ♀ ratio is about 1:10, so the odds would appear to be overwhelmingly in your favor.

thanks fellas. The #'s look good to me. I've got orientation on June 29 so I guess that'll shed more light on the situation.

We had 5 males in a class of 29, only one was gay. The gay male nurse is such a ridiculous stereotype anyways. Out of all of the males nurses that I have worked with only a few have been gay. Most male nurses are just men with families to support that are looking for a good paying, stable career.

In my experience males don't usually fit in very well, the female nurses may treat you nicely, but in the end you are still a man, and there is a barrier that exsists because of that. The exception seems to be with the gay males, they are frequently welcomed with open arms and treated like one of the girls.

I am the only male in my class so 1 out of 21

In my class there were 5 of us out of 40. I did not get along with many of the females because I did well academically and got hated on for it like crazy. I LOVED it when I would see that another guy was in my class, or that I would be working with another guy on a given day....it really lifts my spirits to have other males around just so I can have someone to talk to who isnt judgemental or mean. JG 0311 you are absolutely right about the barrier. Imagine what nursing would be like if you worked on a unit with all male staff.... man it would be like a construction crew except we would be cleaning up poop and passin pills.....no social stress or BS..haha dream on

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

3:1 female to male ratio in my class (32 lady partss : 10 memberes).

All the dudes are heterosexual AFAIK.
