The "Flirt"

Nurses Men

Published

The 'Flirt" is on the loose. How many women flirt with you? Not just your customary flirting, but serious double entendre, risque stuff? No I am not trying to incite some sort of ego competition here. I come from a background of carpenter work and factory work, so the dominant female workforce is new to me...well new as in 2 & 1/2 yrs in the biz. Age range of these flirtatious beings ranges from 20-50ish...I am not extremely handsome nor am I gruesome. Do the ladies just constantly flirt and tell you you're hot as a common way of conversing throughout the day? Obviously I like it because I am a man, and love the smell of perfume and vitamins :-), but I already have trouble driving my car down the street in danger of hitting something when there are females in my field of vision...

Just yackin' here fellas, do you find that the women you work with are just that way or what??

I know this is an old post, but wanted to point out that being female and working with predominantly females, I find that women really flirt and hound men around us at work. I was in the military, surrounded by males, and found them much easier to be around than women are in nursing. Women seem to always have sex on the brain where I work. This is my own comparison from working in two separate fields. I realize we all have biases and our own experience, but it's an interesting debate. I know women's lib has set this debate on its ear, because now women are almost like construction workers catcalling to men in the workplace. I wonder if men really are bothered by it? Certainly not all of theses guys reciprocate or even like these women. Perhaps their egos like it?

How is that acceptable? If it were a group of men in a male-dominated profession, they would be accused of sexual harassment. It has been so PC for so long about sexual harassment, but it's never addressed for the reverse. It is a huge double standard. Somehow women are less predatory or less of a threat? Men should just take it? It embarrasses me as a female working around other females who display this. Can't people save their personal lives for off work time?

On the other hand, like the OP, some men just eat it up and really use it to their advantage, much like a female working in construction who will be sought after and provide a distraction at work.

My issue is when women behave this way, it sets those that don't behave that way in the same light. We work harder to be respected and to be treated as a professional and to pull ourselves from the fray. Not every person at work is using their career to flirt, "hook up" or find a partner.

I work with a guy who is just a 'flirty bird'. He flirts with everyone with his suggestive comments.

In the beginning, it was 'whatever'. Now, he just gets under my skin. I've cooled to him and some of what I told a fellow coworker reportedly got back to him because he keeps the flirting to a minimum now. He's pretty attractive but that's just irrelevant to me. I don't want him. We're at work. I spent most of my life in more professional environments so it really puts me off. Doesn't make me uncomfortable; I just think it's inappropriate. I don't date coworkers (cause you don't poop where you sleep!). I don't want to be on the receiving end of flirtations at work.

Most of my distaste for this behavior has to do with the fact that he's got a ring on his finger.

meh...

there have always been "dirty old men" who are sometimes neither old nor men...

The problem is that sexual harassment and discrimination has been institutionalized against women forever, so we are numb to it.

But look what happens when women do that to men in a primarily female work environment...the men finally get to appreciate what GENERATIONS of women have endured in the workplace for decades.

This is not to say it is okay...NOT OKAY...it is simply to point out how we in America accept our institutional bigotry, racism, sexism, and discrimination UNTIL it touches us personally, then some of us "evolve" while some cling to the security of the "good ol days".

well said.

I'm a young, 22, and handsome guy so I guess it's expected to have a little flirting going on but I've had comments and things done that are borderline too far and if the tables were turned I'd probably have many complaints. Don't you just love double standards.

I thought there might be more flirting, but so far the women around me have managed to keep their cool mostly. I'm impressed with their self-control. :)

When there are hordes of women, it appears all men are targets. I mean ALL men, good-looking or not. Same idea of a few women working with a ton of men. Same concept. Even a skinny old turkey looks good to a pack of wolves.

I have no problem with a friendly smack on the butt.... There are a few chicks at work that do it. I'm just not responsive to it, growing up playing sports and doing coed stuff through school made me numb to it....

Yeah definitely get attention from gals for being the male nurse, that's how I met my fiancée, however nobody knew we were dating for 9 months because we keep work very professional, that's pretty impressive for workin around gossipy folks all the time
