  1. Seasoned Nurses - This one is for you

The ongoing fight of ADN/Diploma vs BSN. We aren't using common sense, nor are our employers. The "magnet status" has created monsters and pushed for "higher education" that in truth has very little to do with critical thinking skills of a bedside ...
  2. What is happening with safe nursing..

I have been an ER nurse for several years. I've always been very proud to be an ER nurse, but see some pretty sad trending in the field. I have a family member that works in the ICU, so I often hear that end of patients that have received some poor c...
  3. Safe Nursing a thing of the past?

Wow. All I can say is wow.
  4. Safe Nursing a thing of the past?

Okay, I apparently am not making my point so let me try this. When I have an ER patient, as the triage nurse, I do a primary assessment - mentation, resp, disability and skin color. In addition to VS. As the primary nurse, I do a secondary and/or ...
  5. Safe Nursing a thing of the past?

In regards to the medical professions relying on machines too much for assessments and diagnostics - if a pulse ox is 98%, do we then assume the cap refill is prompt? If the pulse ox shows a pulse of 88, do we not need to physically check a radial p...
  6. Safe Nursing a thing of the past?

My point was, literally nobody in this ER did a hands on, physical assessment. I wasn't looking for a diagnosis of my mother, the main point in my comment was that this ER did not do an appropriate "triage" upon her arrival, unless standing behind a...
  7. Safe Nursing a thing of the past?

2 weeks ago, my 60 year old mother, for only the 4th time in her life, went to an ER in a moderately sized hospital, part of a large statewide hospital system. Her symptoms/age and recent medical history, were suspicious of stroke activity. Not blata...
  8. What do patients say that irks you?

"Nipple Confusion"!!!!!!! When explaining to mom and dad that their 9-1/2 pound baby desperately needs a bottle for a low sugar!!
  9. Physiology of FHR monitoring

I have sent some letters out to the local educators that do our fetal monitoring courses and hoping for some responses soon. If I don't hear back from them, I'll send off some questions to some of the Level 3 hospitals. I really can't believe it's ...
  10. Physiology of FHR monitoring

Why not? If it is an electrical current, as in an adult, you can have electrical current without mechanical activity and I don't know why a fetal heartrate would be any different. And if you do have two different rates when you have compared it wit...
  11. Physiology of FHR monitoring

Again, I am referring specifically to Fetal Scalp Electrode and this is a big difference from doppler, external heart monitor. I have been researching this for several days without much luck but I did find this little "ditty" that some of you might f...
  12. Physiology of FHR monitoring

I should have clarified. This was an IFM, fetal scalp electrode which would not be the same as doppler and would be picking up electrical activity of baby. That's why I compared it to adult PEA. Any thoughts with that in mind?
  13. Physiology of FHR monitoring

I am semi-new to L&D. I have been to numerous monitoring classes and remember hearing somewhere there could be a tracing yet the heart could not be mechanically functioning. This had to do with beat to beat variability, or rather, the loss of it....
