  1. moving to Reno, any advice

Pet Playhouse does do boarding. I board my dog there, and have had nothing but good experiences with them.
  2. Any Nurses who work at Renown Hospital in Reno?

HR at Renown is notoriously slow. I think it took them 2-2.5 weeks to let me know. HR called me to offer me the job (they do all the calls for interviews/hiring). I had finally given up when they called, so hang in there!
  3. Phlebotomy question for ER nurses

We have a phlebotomist in our ED at all times. They do blood draws in triage, cover blood draws in trauma, and cover any difficult sticks/art sticks/or draws we don't have time to get. We keep them pretty busy.
  4. Tips For New Grad entering ED

Ask questions, get involved, and don't be shy. Seek out any and all learning opportunities that you can. Be prepared to feel overwhelmed and slow...it will pass. Don't get discouraged!
  5. Shoes for the ER??

I absolutely love my Danskos (I now have 3 pair). I have a very hard time finding shoes that don't hurt my feet. These are the only shoes I've found that I can do a 12 hour shift in without pain. As much as I love my Crocs, I can only do 5-6 hours in...
  6. Sentinal Events

Our hospital tried something similar to this, but it only lasted a few months. It was nice while it lasted.
  7. Tips 5 days before the NCLEX-RN exam

The only thing I did was do review questions. Over and over and over. I told myself "you know this material, just be ready for the questions". The day before the test I did no studying. I just relaxed and tried not to think about it. Just an FY...
  8. Each job title wears it's own color.

Our department used to have color-coded scrubs. As far as I know the docs were the only ones who cared. I know they appreciated knowing RNs wore ceil blue. We had a name change, and instead of paying the have the scrubs re-embroidered, they just deci...
  9. going to work sick?

I'd stay home. Don't risk spreading the germs. And if your workplace is like mine, 2 days in a row is one incidence. If you call in sick one day, come back a day, and then decide you're too sick again and call in, it's 2 incidences. I've always t...
  10. OUCH!!!! Ampule issues. Anyone else have problems?

I've never cut myself on ampules, but I know people that have. I think it's stupid that meds still come in glass ampules. They're dangerous. It took me a year to be able to open an ampule without an alcohol wipe around it. I find it easier to open...
  11. Sentinal Events

You just summed up why I hate being in triage. So much responsibility with so many things out of your control. There have been nights when I have been 15 deep for 6 hours, people waiting 2 hours to be triaged. Re-evaluation becomes non-existent on...
  12. Who else ????

I was a political science/international affairs major, heading to law school. Then I realized how much I hate going to an office everyday. Now I'm an ED nurse.
  13. Detox against their will.....

I agree that the forced detox we do in hospitals is unnecessary for the most part. Detox can be very dangerous, and extends the hospital stay for many patients. While I think it is our job to provide education about addiction, and to do everything ...
  14. Most memorable thing patient has said to me...

For me it was the first time one of my critical patients grabbed me on the arm and asked, "am I going to die?". Even though he and his wife knew he was very sick, we had kept things light, joking, laughing, when we could. He waited until his wife ...
  15. question?

If you're asking if it's possible to get a new grad position in the ED with no experience in school, it first depends on if the ED hires new grads. Some EDs will hire new grads with no ED experience. I did an apprenticeship on one of the med-surg f...
