  1. I'm new to agency. Any advice???

I've worked as an agency nurse in the Houston area for a couple of years now. All of the hospitals need us whether they are a "good' place to work or not. I've never had a problem with anybody helping me with something if I ask for it. You do need to...
  2. Help! New BSN grad moving to Houston

Try University General in the Med Center. It's a fairly new hospital and very nice. I've worked there as an agency nurse on Tele and in the ICU. I don't know where you'll be living, but North Cypress is hiring as well as Kingwood Hospital. I don't th...
  3. Too many life changes at once...

I went through a divorce soon after graduating, too. First - get counseling. Talk to your doctor about what's going on and take his advice, even if he wants you to take a medication. Utilize your support system and communicate with your supervisor. T...
  4. Ethical/Legal Issue - Need Advice (HH)

The nurse for this patient is really dropping the ball on this one. I had a case like this - I notified the doc of everything and the patient was placed in LTC the next day. Have your mother document everything, especially the falls. Then the nurse w...
  5. Incident Reports and Staff

Be assertive, not abrasive and don't sign anything until your version of the whole story is in the report as well. If you don't stand up for yourself now it won't get any better. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it - you did your job.
  6. What gauge IV to use?

I would an use an 18g automatically if the vein could take it "just in case". I would also look in the hand first - that's what I was taught to do in school and I've continued the practice since then.
  7. You Know You're a Nurse When...

Get this - night shift, falling asleep while peeing, waking up to the sound of my snoring echoing loudly for the nurses' station entertainment...
  8. How can 1 LPN take on 60 patients in one shift?

Also - you should've been checked off for operating the lift before ever using it with a patient. When I was in school, the aides weren't even around - we did everything. If a classmate isn't around, ask your instructor or preceptor for help. That's ...
  9. How can 1 LPN take on 60 patients in one shift?

With a med-aide and CNA it isn't a problem. Make sure everyone is doing their job and you do yours. Organization is key...
  10. Home Health - Fraud??

Thanks for the input, but I'm so disgusted I'm just staying at the hospital full-time. If I were to write everything that has happened I'd be here all night! My only concern what happens when they're audited? I don't want to have MY name called...
  11. Jcaho Medication Reconciliation

We do the med-rec - but rationale?? Where did that come from? Just another form of pencil-pushing that takes away from real patient care. Ridiculous!
  12. Home Health - Fraud??

I've been working PRN for a home health for a year now. Primarily because my parents are both nurses with the same h.h. and I thought it wouldn't hurt to get that experience along with working with them. So, I've given it a fair chance and I'm done....
  13. Burnt Out LPN!!!!!

I've been in your position years ago and recently. I just want to tell you that GOOD nursing jobs are too easy to come by to stay in one that you hate. Give your two weeks and in that last time be the toughest charge you can be. You are run over beca...
