  1. Are "real" nurses as mean as my future instructors?

If you let the huffing and puffing get to you at the very beginning, you will never make it through. Develop a thick skin, work hard, listen, study, work hard, work hard, learn, learn, learn, listen, learn from your mistakes (and quick) and you will ...
  2. Would you be a nurse if you knew then, what you know now?

No. I would be a teacher. I have a love of learning and sharing knowledge. I would have went right to college, got a bachelor's and masters while living at home with my parents. I would teach young people. Instead of going straight to work after...
  3. Do you like being a CM in the hospital?

Thank you for your honest answers. I had two interviews, so we will see. I feel more comfortable at the hospital, I don't really like the corporate world. This CM position has a SW and SW asst. working together. The pay/benefits are much better and i...
  4. Do you like being a CM in the hospital?

I am a CM for an insurance company currently. This is my first CM position. I am not too happy there for a few reasons, and I've been thinking of a CM position in a hospital. Is it better to be a CM in a hospital? Do you CM's like it? Has anyone ...
  5. Business Knowledge needed for CM??

You definitely need some business knowledge. Insurance companies are all about the money. I work for insurance and I try to be a pt. advocate as much as I can while also being efficient. It's not an easy job, and it is an adjustment for sure.
  6. Case Manager doing Utilization Management

I do both. I do UR for a particular unit and then CM for three other areas. I work for insurance. It gets hectic as I feel torn between the two. We are short staffed and I am covering one CM area almost since I started. I am new to CM as well. E...
  7. Anybody regret leaving the bedside?

Nope. The only thing I miss are my friends. I have a M-F, 9-5 job now. I have a routine, and get more sleep. I have weekends and holidays to look forward to. I am much calmer, and I've lost a little weight. I am interested in the outside world a...
  8. RN Social Worker?

Thanks for the replies. I just started case management, and thought studying social work might be helpful. I really don't want to get a higher nursing degree.
  9. See if I offer to help YOU again...

In my previous job, I would only stay if my NM asked me directly. She only asked directly if there was dire need, otherwise it was staffing calling last minute. If she called my house because of an emergency, I would go in. A friend of mine became...
  10. See if I offer to help YOU again...

Nursing is like the Military. NEVER VOLUNTEER. Enjoy your 10 days off. Just work your shifts for a while after that and do nice things for yourself. That hospital will be up and running when you are long gone.
  11. RN Social Worker?

Hello. Have you ever heard of or do you know anyone who is an RN and then became a social worker? Is there a position out there that combines both? Is there a college in NY that offers this program? Thanks.:redpinkhe
  12. New job update

Hello. I've been at my new CM job for about 3 weeks. Since I have no experience, I am being trained. The people are very nice and helpful. I feel like I am learning a new language! Sometimes I feel ok and sometimes I feel really overwhelmed. Le...
  13. Harrassment by Unit manager--what to do?

Sounds like a very stressful, no-win situation. I think you should find another job. Life is too short to deal with this nonsense. Chalk it up to experience, and start another job with a clean slate. Strive to be happy. Good luck.
  14. starting in cm

Good luck Lisa. I just got a job offer for CM, and I have no CM experience. I just kept plugging away, and the right job came up. I hope I like it too.
  15. opinion re: care coordination RN

Hi Dria, Thanks! I won't be an inpatient case manager. I'll be working for an insurance company. Maternal/Child case manager to be exact. I will check out Nursing Spectrum, and I will ask my new employer as well. :)
