KathySandersSoffos - I have been in LTC for 8 years now, and have never seen things like this on the MAR. This would be something that would either be included in the weekly/monthly assessment or in daily documentation if they were having a medic...

The best assurance I can give is follow your companies policies regarding everything in question. No matter where you are, the surveyor will want to be sure you are following the policy designed by your home/company. ALL of these policies should be d...

I developed a list for our "Nurse Supervisor" (one floor, whichever the supervisor is that day). Call me for unexpected deaths, fire, elopement, fall with injury, and raging family. They do know to call if they have exhausted all efforts to find repl...

My intention was never to be harsh, nor unforgiving. I absolutely love LTC! You're right CrispyCritter, some do come to vent. I came to the wrong posting, and was at too passionate a place in the day. I apologize to all I offended. It was never my in...

I am so saddened and appalled by all of these comments. If you want out of long term care, get out!!!!! If you are not wanting to take care of the amazing people we care for, then get out!!!! The thing is, we care for the most vulnerable people in th...

I agree with the above - pinkiepie. The only time you have to do them separately is with residents with PEG tubes. Otherwise, mix up with applesauce/pudding/jelly and go!

Oh my, it is okay. People are not perfect, we are human and we make errors. I don't care if it is your first week, or your 20th year. You will make a mistake. Make sure you learn from it, and make sure you own it. Then, move on. Don't be discouraged....

I always recommend, after receiving your RN license, that you work in the acute care setting before long term care. It gets you aware of acute issues and critical thinking skills. It also lets you become competent of duties of a RN. That being said, ...

Wholly, he**! I have 9 years experience as a nurse. 8 in long term care, no including the many years I was a CNA before I went to nursing school. I am DON and started at $50,000. Good luck to you!!!

Nick2you, unfortunately this is pretty standard for LTC. I would advise that if you don't feel comfortable that you request more orientation. LTC is awesome and fun, but it isn't for everyone. Good luck!

I have done long term care for 12 years. My suggestion to you is to learn your residents. Learn their in's and out's. Their preferences. Long term care is about the person, not the process. It is not about the amount of medicine you give, or if you g...

Unfortunately, I agree with all the others. In long term care, we focus more on chronically ill patients, and improving their quality of life. Not necessarily their quantity of life. I appreciate your concern, and if you don't feel comfortable, you n...
1) I was a CNA before I started nursing school, and I thought the exact same thing that you did. "I know all about nursing!!!" NOT!!!! You have a slight upper hand, but not very much. Don't go in knowing everything, because then you won't learn anyth...
I wish there was a good answer for you. We have two MDS Coordinator's. I do Medicare/Mgd Care. The other does regulatory and care plans. I am on call 24 hours per day. Even when I'm off, I go in or call in during the day to make sure everything is ri...
