The Little Old Lady

It had been a rough day, and I had to be out of work at 3:30 because I had clinical that evening. I was doing the usual end of shift vitals when I walked past what had been an empty room all day. In the room chair sat a very petite lady looking very lost and scared. I walked in, shook her hand, and introduced myself. She told me her name, and followed it by "I had a doctor's appointment today and he sent me right here and wouldn't tell me why. I don't have anything either. He... Read More →

One Patient that changed my life

She was evil. The devil incarnate. Meaner than a rattlesnake. She had active MRSA, dementia, and was in for cellulitis. She threw four nurses, the Physical Therapist, the Occupational Therapist, and the daylight aide out of her room, and it was only 10:30. I was new to the floor, and greener than the hunter scrubs I wore. I had been warned in report that she was very uncooperative, and to expect being tossed from the room since everyone else had been on that particular day. I... Read More →

That Day in the ER

I reported to clinical on time, and then went down to the ER to check in with the nurses. I had been here before, and knew most of my time would be spent walking patients to the bathroom, gathering urine samples, maybe passing a med or two, taking a lot of vitals, and repeating to patients "I'm sorry, I can't tell you what is happening next door. I can't tell you anything due to the privacy laws." That was fine. I didn't mind doing what needed to be done because I was in the ER and loving... Read More →

LPN school: The First Year

]March 5, 2007. My first night of LPN Nursing School. I was sick to my stomach, nervous as a cat, and ready to quit before I started. Sheer determination made me walk through that door to the classroom and find a seat. Sheer stubbornness kept me coming back night after night, and giving up my weekends. It took me 40 years to get to that point. I had tried for 5 years to be able to enroll and take the spot where I was sitting in now, but life got in the way. I had a parent who... Read More →

I Don't Know Nothin' 'Bout Birthin' No Babies

My very pregnant sister in law called me one day and said "I'm being induced on October 15. I'd like it if you'd be there since you keep talking about going to Nursing School." I hesitated. I took a deep breath. I really wanted to be there, but was it really my place since I knew my brother would be there, and I was sure she would want her Mom there, and my Mom as well. I clutched the phone. "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies, Kels". "Please, Kylee," she begged. "We... Read More →

Going into Nursing... and the Proverbial Kick in the Butt that got me started

I've wanted to be a nurse since I was five years old. On my first day of Kindergarten, I announced at the dinner table that I wanted to be a Nurse when I grew up. I continued along the path until high school, and then decided to go for Practical instead of Registered because I could get done sooner and be out in the world giving excellent patient care. I got talked out of Nursing. I heard from practically everyone that offered opinions. "You don't want to do that, Kylee. Practicals are... Read More →
