4. Portacath KVO rate

   20 ml/hr is what we have used as a TKVO rate. But it should not be left running like this indefinately. If the port is not being used on a regular basis, it would be best left locked off. Refer to you unit policy.

   Check the half life of your drugs. Some chemo metabolites can remain in the faeces for up to seven days. Where I worked, handling precautions were recommended for up to five days.

   Oncology nurses do something of everything. You would have no problem starting in the area. I did. Seven years later and I still want to be in the area. It's never boring.

7. Wearing Gloves for Injections

   I just think of all the times a patient has moved while trying to give them an injection. I am glad for the gloves. Better they catch the edge of a needle than my skin.

   I was hospital based educator for 12 months with only a BSN. I have six years experience in my field though. I missed patient care and went back. Hats off to all the educators out there, its a tougher job than it looks.
