  1. Using phones as a sitter-thoughts?

One can ignore current trends or embrace them. As nurse, I actually had my manager text me at work at ask me to do a double shift. I replied that as per hospital policy I could not respond to her text because I was not to have my phone on my person ...
  2. Patients Say the Darnedest Things

Had a 20 something female overdose patient on the mend in the ICU. Patient said she would marry me,.....her mother was at the bedside and immediately stated she would pay for THAT wedding! I was 50 at the time! 😳 I said I was flattered but it was ...
  3. I don't want to be a nurse

I went through an accelerated BSN program. I had a previous degree in a hard science. I also hated every nanosecond of the nursing program. It was vapid. The instructors were one page ahead of the students. They were often blatantly wrong and became ...
  4. Where to place an AER in the Endoscopy suite

Since the scope goes in "dirty" and comes out "clean", it really doesn't matter. Place it on the "cleaner" end of the processing room
  5. TPN line change policy

We change out tubing every 24 hrs. It's interesting to note, however, that the central line the TPN flows through may not get changed for weeks. Kind of makes how often you change the tubing a moot point.
  6. Rate Your Pain

Yes, the 10/10 pain scale is meaningless. I was in the ER as a patient once with abdominal pain. I was asked the standard questions about pain. I honestly stated it was a 10/10 because it was the worst pain I've ever had,....but, I followed with it ...
  7. NP's answering to Nursing Management?

NP or PA, both are considered Physician Extenders. Most nurse managers I've known where incompetent to manage the nursing staff. The level of incompetence would only rise if allowed to manage physician extenders.
  8. Topics relating to nursing and culture?

Try: Cultural Aspects of Pain Management. Instructors will love it!
  9. Should ICU get more pay than floor nursing?!?

Well,....lets see. Recently, an RRT was called on the Tele floor. I dropped what I was doing, ran up 3 flights of stairs and was told the patient was in Vtach. Looked at the patient,....seems fine. Looked at the monitor and quickly checked the Tele b...
  10. Micro Frustrations

It has been said that the only way you truly understand a topic is when you have to teach it. Try preparing for exams by pretending you have to actually teach the material to others. If you can perform a mock lecture that includes all the test materi...
  11. Should ICU get more pay than floor nursing?!?

Well,.....The fact remains that,....no matter WHERE in the hospital a patient goes bad,.......They end up in the ICU. There is a reason for that. I was having a conversation with a bunch of Residents, Attendings and Pharmacists yesterday. They didn't...
  12. Should ICU get more pay than floor nursing?!?

Well,...sorry to say,....despite your inferiority complex,....ICU nurses are better. More skills, more experience, more ability. Please let the whining stop and give me evidence to the contrary......
  13. Should ICU get more pay than floor nursing?!?

If you want nursing to be treated well,...you need to accept that better training should result in better pay. As it stands now,...a nurse is a nurse is a nurse. Just quit that thinking!
  14. Should ICU get more pay than floor nursing?!?

    Sigh,.......
  15. Should ICU get more pay than floor nursing?!?

So,....if every new graduate is told to get a good foundation on a Med/Surg floor, does that not indicate that Med/Surg nursing is where neophytes belong? It is the entry level position for nursing. How in all things holy can you defend a newbie bein...
