Where to live in boston

I'm hoping to move to boston mid February and work in the Longwood area. I'm wondering where most nurses like to live in the boston area and what's affordable but nice.

Well (almost) congrats! Don't make too many plan until the ink is dry!

Are kids/schools important? Rent or buy?

Longwood is easily accessed via the green line on the MBTA. The most affordable neighborhoods are Brookline, Arlington, Brighton. There is also a free bus from Dorchester and South Boston. There are good and bad areas of most neighborhoods. Work with a good local realtor.

Ugh, the green line is the worst line on the MBTA. Live on the Orange line or by the 39 bus if you can. It took me less or the same time taking 2 buses from Roslindale to get to Longwood than it did taking the green line 3 stops from Brighton. You can't depend on it. It breaks down multiple times/day and the trains are constantly too full or going out of service. The worst thing ever is when you wait in the snow and freezing cold for 20 minutes for a train, it finally comes and then after one stop it decides to go express to Fenway (past Longwood). That happened to me on my first day off orientation in the hospital... and though the head of the green line assured me it was "prohibited" for trains to skip Longwood, I can't even count how many times it happened to me in the four years that I was living in Brighton/working in Longwood.

I recommend West Roxbury, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, the South End (can be pricy), South Boston or some neighborhoods of Dorchester (by JFC/UMass). AVOID Roxbury and Mattapan- you don't want to be taking public transportation after dark in those areas. Allston/Brighton is on the green line but full of undergrads. Charlestown is also a possibility, right on the orange line. Mission Hill is walkable from Longwood but be careful to live closer to Brigham Circle than to the Roxbury side of it.
