Hello!

I cant seem to stop obsessing over where I can move....I really need to get out of Florida!

I LOVE New England and keep looking at different scenarios--a place to live for a family of 6, where my hubby can find work, and I can begin my career as a RN, and good schools and quality of life for my kids.

I would love to live outside Boston, but the cost of living is not condusive to a good family life.

The past few days I have been GOOGLE-ing nonstop--LOL. I think someone needs to iniate an intervention.

Anyway.... I was wondering if anyone had any advice about this scenario:

I could live outside Providence, RI and take the commuter train into Boston for work. I would like to make 75K. Is this possible? I think I can do midnights and wouldnt need benefits (DH gets them).

Do you think this seems do-able and realistic? I graduate in May with a BSN (have NO experience outside of school clinicals). I was thinking the 7pm to 7am shift would work good as far as $ and family goes. I could get them off bus everday and have dinner with them and sleep during day when they are in school.

Is anyone still reading this? LOL

For your plan, please don't forget winter weather! Trains sometimes

do not run on time . We have had an additional wrinkle here.

The Big Dig project to Boston is a Big Disaster. The taxpayers paid

way over the projected budget. Recently a large concrete ceiling

block (wt= 1 ton) came loose, fell and injuried the driver, and killed his wife.

The tunnels have many problems-they flood, there is concern about

the fans becoming detached.

All this above to let you know many more people are relying on

the public transit-trains, commuter rail.

There are other opportunities west of the city, but I do not know

what the hospitals are paying. There is also work in Providence

as well .

The big dig has been going on since I swear I was in diapers....so that shouldn't disuade her from moving back to MA/NH/RI ......I was born and raised NH...but worked in Boston and commuted south. Why not move to the seacoast of NH (Stratham, Exeter)....income tax free, and with that being said, you can take the commuter rail out of newburyport. Now, pay...you're a new grad and will probably make around 30 hour after differentials, maybe a bit less. So that is 60 a year. After a few years you might get up to 75. And after a few years of experience you could do a travelling nurse agency, make the 75, get paid a stipend for housing and just keep reupping your contract when it comes due. Just a few thoughts. Don't give up, I'm not, after I get my RN (and 2 years under my belt) we are MOVING HOME. I can't wait. Plus, housing has been dropping, so that is great news if you are looking to buy

Some wonderful places to live and work in RI. Providence has some great hospitals, RI Hospital, Women's & Infants, Hasbro Children's......to name just a few. What I love about Little Rhody is that it is such a teeny weeny state that you can get anywhere in the state in no time at all.

I was born and brought up in Boston and vicinity. I still commute to Boston

on a regular basis from the South Shore. My post is not meant to

disuade anyone,where to move- that is a personal choice. It has been a real challenge

for many of us to work around the Big Dig in all it stages including

this most recent event. I want the op to be informed that

1) it will not be a quick fix to get things on this project corrected.

2) My apology if my post was taken any way other than to inform

and provide other alternatives as well.

The op is welcomed to contact me directly if she would like

more info on commuting from my area.

and the beaches and the restaurants-excellent !

I lost my message, I live half way between Boston and Providence. The commute via commuter rail will be an hour and then another 15-40 minutes to get to the hospital of choice. Also I don't know anyplace that will pay a new grad $75K. Working 7pm, you would have to leave your home around 5-5:30pm and would not get home until after 8:30 AM

Thanks for all your replies! Lots to consider. Maybe $75k is not realistic (dreaming student) I based that on 30 base(inc diff) plus no benefits. Another post said that was 15% on top of base. Is this not true? Anyway, thanks for all the advice. I think I should start obsessing on getting prepared for next term....

I think the Nashua,Statham and areas around there are looking best. My DH likes the look of the work he would have there. He is a water resource engineer and the projects in NH interest him. The schools look good, and the commute shouldnt be toooo bad if I work 7 to7

Just a note on the "income tax free" thing. Yes, NH does not have income tax, however if you work in Massachusetts and live in NH you still have to pay MA income tax at the same rate as MA residents. Just something to keep in mind, especially if you wanted to own your own home in NH (high property taxes).

I will say if you work in Mass, you will pay into their taxes but when you file your state taxes with Mass and show you are a NH resident, you get most of it back. I wish my dad's lady knew about this website...She is an ICU nurse, works just over the border in Mass and works mostly nights...she made 75k last year, but has like 10 years experience. Still not to shabby. I wish you the best of luck....and I will agree, Rhode Island is also beautiful, but you can also catch a pretty reliable T ride out of there into Boston, I lived in North Providence and commuted into Boston. Slept the whole way in and the whole way out.
