Curry College BSN Program for Jan, 2010

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hi ~

Did anyone out there apply to Curry BSN Accelerated program for January of 2010? I believe they notify those who are accepted to the program in April. Does anyone know if they send a letter or call? Just wondering.... and anxiously waiting to hear!!!!

Thanks!

That sounds about right. I attended from 01/07-05/08... I believe I found out in April. Good luck!

Hi Cityhawk!

How did you like the program? Was there anything about it that you didn't like? Was it difficult to find a job after graduating? Did you find the help that Curry provided with your resume and such to be helpful?

I'd love to hear more about your experience if you care to tell us!

Thanks. :)

I just started the program in January--will graduate in May 2010. I believe I heard the first week of April by letter.

They're keeping us pretty busy this semester w/two full days of classes (Med-Surg I, Peds, Assessment and Patho), plus a clinical skills lab one morning a week for 6wks. It's the only time in the program when there are two full days of classes--the rest of the time we'll have one day of classes, plus clinicals.

Best of luck!!

I liked the program, though there were times when I was in the program when I liked it less than others. As a former student is quoted as saying, it's like taking a drink of water from a fire hydrant. I liked the organization of it; it assumes a lot of independent study, which allows you flexibility in creating your own schedule. As dtrmnd2sccd said, there is one semester where you are in classes 2 days/ week; the fall and following spring semesters are 1 day of classes and 1 day of clinicals. The summer semester is pretty intense with one day of classes and three days of clinicals/week. But I felt well-prepared for the NCLEX and as prepared as one can be for work once the program was done. Teachers were mostly great, a couple who were... ah... well, more challenging than they needed to be... But overall, a great experience.

Good luck!

LOL, CityHawk... I'm hoping you're referring to first semester w/the fire hose comment--does it get worse?!?!

To the OP, just a sample of my schedule this coming month:

3/26--Med-Surg 6-8p paper & Patho exam 2

3/31--Assessment Exam 2

4/7--Peds Exam 2 & Assessment PP Presentation

So... in a week and a half, I'll have 3 exams, an 8 page research paper AND a class presentation!! :typing

The great thing about the program is how organized it is. I have two kids I have to arrange childcare for, but I already know not only this summer's schedule (one day of class, three days clinical for 8 wks) but also this fall's as well (Mon class, Tues clinical). It is great to have everything condensed into two days/week (except for summer) when you have kids... on the other hand, after taking a really challenging test last week, I had to sit in 5 more hrs of classes before I could go home to a glass of wine... but boy, did I enjoy it!

Best of luck!

SO glad to hear that the program is organized!! That's the major reason why I want CURRY!!! I also have 2 kids, and you have to have some kind of idea of what your schedule is, so you can plan for childcare!! I'm so relieved to hear that they give you all of the information well ahead of time!! Are you finding it difficult to juggle school with your family responsibilities? How old are your kids? Overall, it sounds like you are able to keep up with everything, which is very comforting to hear!!

In all honesty, my least favorite semester (and the same held true for most of my classmates as well) was the Fall. There is probably more work in the first semester, but the classes are all coordinated and similar in content. For example, when talking about the cardiovascular system in Med Surg, you are also going through it in Patho and health assessment, etc. The Fall semester, you've got Community nursing, Psychiatric nursing, Nursing Research and Gerontology. None of the classes overlap. The bright spots of the Fall semester are Linda Tenofsky teaching Gerontology and Carolyn Lawless who taught Research (she was a riot). We also really liked Eileen O'Connell who was the assistant prof for psych.... though that class wasn't all that much fun for most of us.

Once you make it through the fall, however, the final semester is the easiest one.

Thanks cityhawk for your honest and insightful feedback. I'm so excited about Curry, I don't hear until April 1st, but it's really good to get a sense of what their program is like. Scheduling wise, I think Curry will be a really good fit for me, unlike some of the other schools out there, which shall remain nameless at this point. (I had a really good feeling after I left the orientation, just got the sense that they are really organized and know what they are doing, unlike some other schools I looked into!!!!) Thanks again for sharing!!!

LOL Pinkemme, my thoughts exactly. I wouldn't be surprised if our "nameless" schools are the same. ;)

Best of luck with your application!:)

I'm glad to hear that you had a good experience with Research because I am very interested in this area. I really think it would be a great fit for me. Thanks for giving us so much open and honest feedback! It really helps. :)

BTW, in case I didn't make my opinion clear, I agree with those who find it well-organized. They seem to know what they're doing. It is one of the older accelerated programs and they do listen to the students and tweak it a little, improving it each year.
