UMSON BSN Fall 2013

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hello everyone! It's my first time posting on this website. Just wanted to see who else is applying for the BSN program for Fall 2013? Any advice for new applicants? :)

EEEEEKK finally ready for review!! I'm super nervous (although I do have a backup plan of just staying at UMD and finishing up my BS in knes). I'm a bit worried about my GPA's (even though at both MC and UMD, I pulled off GPA's of 3.30). I do have one C in A&P I, and I retook 2 other classes

Hi everybody :)I've applied (pretty last minute) to the Fall BSN program and my application status finally says complete and ready for review. I have a 3.73 GPA with all my prereqs complete and a science gpa of 3.5. My TEAS V score was 85.3% with above 80% on each section. I have recommendations from a Statistics and an Anatomy professor. I didn't have any medical experience or volunteer work on my resume, but I have worked as a caregiver for a woman with special needs for almost 3 years. Does my lack of medical experience and volunteer work hurt my chances? Also, I earned my high school diploma through a GED test and did not graduate from HS. I've been wondering how the admissions commitee would view that.

Question for Grey Lady regading GPA. Does the committee average the separate GPAs across all colleges attended or do they concentrate on the one where the degree was granted? In my case, the first year at college X I got a 3.0. Then I transferred to college Y and graduated with a 3.7 in health sciences. Thanks!

The committee does not assign and/or crunch numbers to come up with a single score for each applicant. There is no one formula which determines guaranteed acceptance. They look at you as individuals and they look at everything in your application in detail and they evaluate the information based on their experiences with successful and unsuccessful students. Then they discuss and they vote.

Grey Lady,

Good Afternoon!

I have applied to the Baltimore campus for entry in the fall semester. I am concerned because my status still shows complete and ready for review, and not commitee ready.

I did have one transcript that shows as recieved February 7th. However, this was the second transcript that I had sent from this school. The first transcript sent was mailed out from the school on December 10th, however, did not show up as received long after the rest of the documents had. I had a second transcript sent in the hopes that it would get there on time but unfortunately it didn't.

Does this mean that my application will not be reviewed and will automatically be rejected?

"Complete and ready for review" means that everything is there. You should not be worried but you can call the office of admissions if that will make you feel better. It takes a long time to move all the applicant files to the "Committee Ready" status which indicates they have been doublechecked again for all needed documents and organized/prepared for the admissions committee analysis.

I have a question for GreyLady - I received an email from the admissions office saying that i needed to earn a 3 credit elective by the beginning of the fall semester if I am accepted. Should I wait to see if I am accepted before earning the credit or should I do it asap? I'm not sure if the email is an indication of my application being considered or if this is just somethng they send everyone with outstanding credits. I was stupid to assume a 2 credit elective and a 1 credit elective equalled a 3 credit elective.

Hello Grey Lady,

I also received an email similar to JulieBeans about an outstanding requirement. They said that I need to take EN 109 at MC. The issue is that I am not at MC anymore because I transferred to UMCP. I have taken EN190 and I am currently taking ENGL 395 (Writing for Medical Professionals) at CP. Would any of these count towards my English 2 requirement? UMCP doesn't offer an EN109 class. For them, if you do not get an A in English 2, you have to take a Professional writing course (ENGL 300+).

I actually emailed the admissions office back with questions about which courses fulfilled the requirement and received a email back right away. I'd email them your question. Also, if your current English course does not fill the requirement, you can test out of courses and earn credits through the CLEP or DSST.

Thanks Julie :) I actually did email them back, but they never said what the equivalent course would be for UMCP. They just repeated that I have to take EN109 at MC. What are CLEP and DSST?

Isn't EN109 "Writing for Business and Technology"? The CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program and the DSST stands for DANTES Subject Standardized Tests.

I'm not sure why you would specifically need to take EN109. For my English Prereqs I just took college English I and II - it sounds like you're taking an even more advanced course.

Interesting. I know I have outstanding courses also, but I haven't received an email about it yet.

Have both of your apps changed to "committee ready"?

Mine still says "complete and ready for review"

My status still says Complete and Ready for Review. I may have received that email because I indicated a 2 credit and 1 credit elective in place of a 3 credit elective on the prequisite checklist. If you left spots empty or indicated you were in the process of earning a credit or planning on it, they may not have deemed it necessary to inform you of outstanding prereqs.
