UMSON BSN Fall 2013

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hello everyone! It's my first time posting on this website. Just wanted to see who else is applying for the BSN program for Fall 2013? Any advice for new applicants? :)

Hey ambz13,

I also have a C in a science course (microbiology from a long time ago... it was an unfair grade, and I contested it, but for legal reasons the college couldn't take it off my transcript). I retook the class and got an A, and I scored in the 99th percentile on the TEAS. Where did you read that the C in science is a deal breaker?

The admissions committee will use the A in Micro as an indication of your ability. A C in one of the required sciences (Micro, Chem, A & P I & II) is not impressive but it depends on your competition and everything else in your application. Have there been semesters where no one with a C in those courses were admitted? Yes. But not every one in the past.

Hi, Grey Lady! When do you think they will start sending out letters?

Hey Grey Lady,

Thanks for the response! I'm glad that UMSON will smile at the more recent A in the same class. :) I will admit that the older C has caused me no small anxiety.

Hi, Grey Lady! When do you think they will start sending out letters?

That depends on many variables - how many applicants, how late paperwork is received, how much is missing, snowmaggedens, the percentage of highly qualified applicants, how difficult it is to convene the admissions committee, employees out sick, etc. You are looking at 8 to 10 weeks so sometime in April. Your status will change from Requirements Outstanding to Complete and Ready for Review, to Committee Ready (you would stay at this status for a long time) to either Admit Institution (you are in!) or Provisional Admit (you are in IF you get Bs or better in all outstanding courses).

I know it's really hard, but try to be patient and don't bother to check your status this month. It will just drive you crazy.

Hi everyone,

I am wondering about the merit scholarships. Grey Lady, or any current or past students, do you happen to know about the criteria for receiving one or how many are given out? Are these full scholarships or partial?

Many thanks!

Sarah

Specializes in ER/Critical Care.

Thanks for clarifying Grey Lady!

So I might have a small chance -but I'm okay with that. Some chance is better than no chance!

Not getting in doesn't mean not becoming a nurse, however, I would be completely ecstatic if I could make it in.

ersoch- :) You will probably be in great shape since you have retaken it and received and A! I still need to retake mine in the summer. It's funny because I felt like A&P I was easier and pretty straightforward, while A&P II was much more difficult and had more complicated physiology.

Grey Lady- Do you know if TEAS scores factor in with the science GPA? For example: If a student has a 4.0 science GPA and a science TEAS of 52, is that seen as a red flag? Same with the other way around; a student has a 3.0 science GPA and a score in the 90's on TEAS science section. I'm curious because I'd really like to tweak my application if I do not make it in for Fall 2013.

That has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I only know that they are awarded once the admissions process is finished and that they are announced to the student when the student is told they have been admitted.

A TEAS score below 70 in any section is seen as a red flag and will be looked at closely. Exactly how and what weight will be given is strictly at the discretion of the admissions committee.

Now the wait... Good luck everyone!

Thanks!

Good for u! Believe yourself and wish u the best

Question for Grey Lady regading GPA. Does the committee average the separate GPAs across all colleges attended or do they concentrate on the one where the degree was granted? In my case, the first year at college X I got a 3.0. Then I transferred to college Y and graduated with a 3.7 in health sciences. Thanks!
