Attention new grads may 2009

U.S.A. Maryland

Is anyone having any luck so far with hospitals in Maryland? All of the hospitals that I have talked to have told me that they are not looking at new grad applications until April. Is anyone else hearing the same thing? This seems so late to me!!!

I'm shocked that UMMS is NOT hiring new grads. Any unit? Just UMMC? What about other sites, i.e. MD Gen, BWMC, et cet? That would be really surprising....

I wanted to answer some questions about clinical scholars (I have to answer it on here because I do not have enough posts to send a PM yet-sorry!)

I did not do the student residency program provided by UMMS but I did work there as a tech. For clinical scholars you need at least a 3.0 GPA and write a short essay, you then apply to any unit you would like to work on. This all usually happens towards the end of your second to last semester. As a part of clinical scholars you agree to work on that unit for a specific amount of time after graduation. You get $2000 for 12 months and $5000 for 18 months, this is applied to your tuition for your senior year.

feel free to ask any more questions!

Thanks so much! You're most likely going to hear me ask more questions about this later in the future! I heard that the scholar's program is a bit easier to get into if you do the residency program... and with the whole scare with hospitals not hiring new grads, it would really open up some opportunities for me. I really do hope it gets better by May 2010 when it's by turn to hunt for a job. This thread actually makes me really nervous, lol.

***As for everyone else...I know that WHC does something called a dream day? I'm not sure if they're still doing it/ if they're hiring anyone new...but basically what you do is go shadow around 3 nurses on 3 different units and at the end of the day they interview you and possibly offer you a job.

Yes, I am having some difficulty finind new grad jobs, but I'm picky too. Working on an advanced degree and a bit "older" grad as a second career, but I've had some call backs. I just don't want to move around so I'm going to wait until the June New Grad Program at the Hospital I want to stay at hope they will let me continue with my MSN schedule. It's only two months, but I feel anxious too!

I was wondering if anyone has been looking for jobs in Colorado? I will probably be moving there with my husband (we're getting married in June) for his job, and I wasn't sure how hard it would be to get a job as a new grad. I'm not really picky, just don't want to work nights if I can avoid it. Thanks!

What is the June New Grad program?

Thanks!

New Grad Programs are offered by some of the bigger, private and University Hospitals here in CA. You get a lot of training, orientation, and preceptorship.

You have to keep in mind that there are a lot of nursing students in the state of Maryland that are staying here. New grad positions are scarce right now. Even Marylanders are having problems finding jobs. It's sad, but true. One of the reasons I entered this field was for job security. I know some December grads that are still looking for new grad spots. Even if you went to a big university, the local hospitals are familiar with the local nursing programs and which ones have good reputations and tend to hire based on that. It may be harder to relocate than you think as a new grad for right now.

Hi - I am writing an article on this very topic and would like to talk to nursing grads and other nurses. Please contact me to talk about this issue at [email protected] or 410-454-0518.

Thanks!
